Show One of tiik Meanest traiu of human hu-man nature, is that of impeaching the motive prompting an action right and houorablo in itself, and of this trait the soreheads are guilty who question lie purity of intention that led to the notice published by bihop Hunter, notifying all persons in want, in the city, to make their wants secretly se-cretly or openly known to the ward bishops and they would be relieved. It is characteristic of sordid men, destitute des-titute of practical sympathy, to sui-pect sui-pect the impulse that induces a charitable char-itable act. Themselves beyond the reach of any appeal for charity, they are flittered by the reflection that a kindness can never result from any other than an unworthy motive. This kind of men are infinitely meaner than even those whose liberality is tinged with selti-hness, for to the needy a charity tainted with a reflective advantage ad-vantage to the giver is better than no charity at all; but this view is beyond the comprehension of men from whom no thine but the assurance of a return iu compound cash could elicit a donation dona-tion for a worthy purpa-e. |
