Show INKA.OlS. We clip the following from the ban Francisco Chronicle of the 17th, being a telegraphic dispatch to that paper from its special correspondent in this city. After reading statements so utterly ut-terly untiuthful, vile and malicious, every gentleman in this- region acquainted ac-quainted with the facts, will agree with us that their author is a mendaciously disreputable bohemian. unworthy of even the common courtesies of society: Salt Lake, April lf. The community commu-nity wan intensely excited to-day on the rpc.onlinn nt' tlif decision of I he United States supremo court, which practically practi-cally places the courts of the Territory under the control of the Mormons. The Gentiles arc depressed, but bitter and defiant, determined to take caro of themselves, if tho courts or congress con-gress can't afford .protection. The Mormons aro greatly elated and arrogant, and on receipt of the telegraph report of the decision assumed supreme power over the property prop-erty and liberties of citizens. The police have been specially busy, arresting arrest-ing saloon keepers and morchants not taking oat, or without licenses. They assaulted Jos. Silver, a leading apostate, apos-tate, strangled him, dragged him over the counter of his store, and brutally hustled him through tho Btoro to the city prison. A great crowd of Gentiles soon followed, and judge Jlaydon denounced de-nounced the outrage and demanded his release, which was granted. The prisoner gave bonds to appear Monday next. The outrage moots with hearty reprehension rep-rehension f rom the decent portion of tho community. A general determination determin-ation is expressed to organize and resist re-sist the Mormon outrages, since the courts arc wiped out and Brigham Young is again in the ascendant. Congress Con-gress alone can afford protection to Gentiles, and must be quick to prevent civil disturbance. Either Americans or Mormons must rule Utah; there can bo no middlo ground. A crisis is rapidly rap-idly approaching. Voorhcca' bill is indorsed in-dorsed by all Gentiles. |
