Show BIG COTTONWOOD. Hltver Fork A Snow Tunnel Work on the Mluft-OcUre-Sundrln. !S.tcil Correspondence of the IKraU. Ct-vntAL City, June Sth, 171. Editors Utrald : An idea commonly prevails that to clamber over ti;ep and tail mountains (pru.-pcctiug; is highly conducive to good health; but as f once heard a man reply to anuihcr, who was about to un-1 dcrtake his fiot sea voyage, and who. was exceeding fearful of becoming sea-, sick, and who tiually, as a doperate alleviation of his apprehensions, inquired in-quired if sea-sickness was not generally followed by a hiirh state of health, " i'es, probably, but I dnn't want to derive any sui'U:;rv benefits by under-win under-win it such an ordeal." Yesterday I tangcnti.-d right and left from the bottom bot-tom of this canon up to the top and over into the limits of the Big Cottonwood Cotton-wood district. The snow on the north side of the divide is very deep, so deep that on the trail to Silver Pork, A TUNNEL T1IKOCU1I THE SNOW, Some thirty feet in length has been cut, to avoid the ri.-k to life which would ensue from a mis-step in traveling travel-ing over the almost perpeudiculor surface. sur-face. At Silver Pork, but little work has been done since last fall, as the mines were not sufficiently developed to admit of winter working to any advantage. ad-vantage. Now, however, preparations are being made for active operation, and work has already commenced on some of the more prominent mines. Among these last are the Congress, Highland Chief and Prince of Wales, owned by tho Walker Bros., and the Davenport. Dr. Chadburne, who has, a controlling interest in the Welling-! ton, Lone Star State, Great Eastern, and Ida, tells mo that he will resume work upon all of them next week. THE SAVAGE AND MONTEZUMA Are not now being worked, the former having foul air at the bottom of the shaft, and the incline of the latter has a considerable depth of water. I un-: un-: derstand that the owners of these mines will immediately construct a tunnel to : tap the veins at the bottom of or below j the present workiugs, which will insure thorough drainage and ventilation, and jmay be cheaply done, as the coufonna-1 coufonna-1 tion of tho ground is very favorable. 'It is also stated that these companies intend to build a tramway down the declivity of the mountain to the wagon road, to lower ores and hoist supplies needed for the mine. Sound policy dictates the propriety of this improvement, improve-ment, and there are a number of mines in this and the contiguous canons that will find it to be economical to construct tramways from the mines to points accessible by wagons. OCHItE Is the favorite indication hereabouts with prospectors, and any deposit of a reddish brown color is located in the confident anticipation that it is the upper stratum of a chloride lode. -An amusing story b told of an enthusiastic silver seeker, who struck what he I sunnosed was a well-defined and regular vein of ochre. He traced and uncov-j uncov-j ered it for a length of about fifty feet, jwas confident of having struck the j counterpart of the Emma, and would i not have- paid a small premium to be assured of a fortune. But dovelop-i dovelop-i ment dissipated the high hopes of our prospector and sent the mercury of his buoyancy down to zero. A day's work with pick and shovel demonstrated his vein of ochre to be only the rotten trunk of a fallen tree! Sic traiisit, etc. MISCELLANEOUS NEWS. j The canon road is being rapidly improved, im-proved, and the Emma Company are , constructing a connecting road to their dump. The towns, Alta and Central, i have improved until they coalesce. A protest of citizens has been filed at the jLand Office, against tho entry by any individual of a quarter section of land ; at this locality, upon the ground that the land is mineral bearing, and is exempt ex-empt from location in any manner as agricultural land, under a special law of Congress. Keports acoompanied by samples of the ore aa vouchers, tell of rich discoveries on Deer Creek, a branch of American Pork, The snow on tne southern slope ot the canon will ' soon be gone unless another installment .is due from the Clerk of the Weather on Spring account. The Monitor Mag-! Mag-! net Company are busiiy at work with I as large a force of miners as can be, at present, worked to advantage. The Colorado and California Tunnel and ! Mining Company have commenced iwork about J,500 feet south of the Emma, and are running a tunnel in tho mineral which I have designated as the Comstock of Utah. This company will incorporate under the laws of this Territory. Yours, Wasatch. |
