Editors llvrald : I having jut returned from a tour through the' Ferris and Se initio mining disti iets, where I gathered the following follow-ing items; Upon my arrival at the Ferris district, I called upon Mr. Geo. Ferris, the lirst discoverer of galena here, and after whom the district was named. Mr. Ferris is a whole-souled, genial gentleman, and a thorough western man. He is superintendent of the North Platte mining company. This company at present are only working work-ing (bur men. They ate down from ten to twenty-five feet ou several of ' their leads; on the South tho shaft j is tweuty-fivo feet. This lead has pinched from twenty inches I to lour inches. There has been no work done on it lately, although they will soon resume operations on it. There is about a ton of ore on the dump, most of it bcingcameil off by ! visitors. The Seminolo is down twenty feet. As yet thcro have only been a few pieces of galena found in this mine. The Ferris is down twelve feet, with a twenty inch orcvioe. There is about six tons of ore on the dump. Assays from this have ranged from $S0 to $y0 per ton silver, with from 40 to 50 per cent, lead, Tins is pronounced by all to bo tho best lead yet found in this district. The North Western company are down twenty - two feet on tho. North Western. As yet they have no defined wall rock. They sunk twenty feet through ochre, ! at which depth they struck some-! very fine-looking ore greatly re- sembling tho "Tintic ore." Nearly ! everybody seems to bo waiting for some ! one else to develop a lead beforo they I go ahead on theirs. There arc nearly a hundred loads located, and only ten ! men in camp. The formation is prin- , cipally limestone, with sum little granite. The hills are very abrupt , and steep. Facilities for procuring a i conveyance to the mines from here are much better than heretofore, several ; parties having teams and saddle- ; horses, which can be procured on ; short notice and at reasonable rates. ' ROAD WANTED. The citizens hold a mass meeting a few days ago to devise means for putting j a road to tho Semino and Ferris min- ingj camps; a committee was ap-' pointed to solicit subscriptions, and another to survey the most practicable j route, and report at the next meeting. It is expected tho county commission- i ers will take tho matter in hand and , declare it a public highway. IRON. Messrs. Bristol & Daggett, ol'Bing- ' ham canon smelting works, sent a ; young man down here to look at our red iron- ore. He pronounces it to bo ' very pure iron, and just what they have been- very much in need of for fluxing. Be procured a car load for ; trial. If the Union Pacific railroad j can be prevailed on to give a reasonable i freight rate, it will create quite aiv industry here. TAXI'S. The sheriff is now collecting taxes, ' and it is expected the assessment will pay our county indebtedness for the current year, and a debt outline thousand thou-sand dollars harnessed on us by county officials appointed by the governor. 1 This speaks of itself for a Democratic i administration of one year of county; affairs. As this is too long already, I will ; reserve tho description of the Semino district for my next. Weather cool and delightful. Claude. |
