The committee of ways and means were in session until nearly midnight last night, and have the tarill and tax bill completed and voted to authorize their chairman toj report the bill, but he did not remain until the session was concluded, and it is not yet definitely settled on whom will fall the responsibility of introducing intro-ducing the' bill, if Dawes does, it will be with the express understanding that the right to oppose the hill, if necessary, neces-sary, shall be reserved lo him. The committee made a number of changes in the bill, but none of very great im portance. Tea, coll'ee, iron, steel, salt and cotton remain unchanged. To the section on wools is added the proviso that, no wools from east of tho Cape of Good II ope shall pay a higher rate of duty than like wools if imported from any other part of the world. On upper leather of all kinds of skins tanned and dressed, the duty is fixed at 2j per cent., ad valorem; and on felting leather at 15 per cent. The duty on all kinds of manufactured lumber is reduced one half. Stamps on agreements and contracts are stricken stric-ken out, and the amount of exemption on leases is increased to $500. Saving bank deposits to tho amount of $2,000 are exempted from tax.- Stamps on bank checks are repealed. |
