Show GENERAL BUTLER'S XEXT FRIEKD. The Essex candidate for Cfovernor of Massachusetts, in his neat little colloquy collo-quy with Speaker Blaine, announced that he "had no favors to ask of the devil." This will be gratifying to those who have been distressed by a rumor that he had asked favors and been refused; for the quarrel now seems to be made up. The story may not be strictly true, but it is so characteristic charac-teristic of Butler's forecasting spirit, and displays so much good sense on the part of Satan that it cannot injure the reputation of either to make it public. It would appear that the Essex member, wishing to lay up his treasure in heaven, interviewed or corresponded with St. Peter about'getting into office there; representing tha;t he was connected con-nected with the fishing interests, which the saint had to do with on earth, and promising to look after the Pope's case, "for a consideration." St, Peter, however, how-ever, was as inexorable as Speaker Blaine two years ago, and told the general plainly he would not open the door for him. He then renewed a former negotiation with Satan, and electioneered for admission to his domains, do-mains, but Lucifer had got up too early to let in such a mischief-maker, and was as firm in his refusal as St. Peter had been. Butler pleaded and argued, all in vain, till finally his Satanic Satan-ic majesty said: "General, I ean't and won't have you here; I should have no peace of my life if I let you in. But I feel ibr you, and will sell you all the brimstone you want at wholesale prices, and let you go off somewhere and make a hell of your own." Elder Knapp, who knows the whole geography of those regions, and is at work on a directory di-rectory of Satan's kingdom, can perhaps per-haps tell exactly where this little arrangement ar-rangement is to be carried into effect. From the positive and cheerful tone of Butler yesterday, we have no doubt he has come to some agreement with Satan, as he has with several of his emissaries here in Massachusetts.
