Sumner rising to a personal explanation, called attention to what was purported to be a report of a speech made by him. last Friday in executive session and published in the New York llrrald of Saturday. Trumbull, interrupting, remarked that all the reports of executive sessions f several days past were inventions of correspondents. Sumner, resuming, hoped that wherever these reports had gone this: contradiction would follow. Fisher Ames once said that a lie would .travel from Maine to Georgia while truth nas putting on its boots. Wilson offered a resolution, which li.':s on the table, that the Sergeant-at-urnis be directed to discharge White and Ruuisdell immediately after the final adjournment of the Special Ses sion of the Senate. ; , Sumner offered a resolution, which lies over, that Messrs. White and liauisdeil, who are in close custody of the Sergeant-at-arms, be discharged from custody. - ' " " . Trumbull, from the committee on judiciary, to whom was referred the resolution to inquire whether senators sena-tors are entitled to mileage for attending attend-ing the present extraordinary session, uiL'de a report thereon to the effect that .senators are not, under law, entitled to mileage. . The Tribune s special says," it is stated on the best authority that the' opponents of the treaty cannot possibly muster more than1 a dozen votes .against it; several Democrats, whose course has heretofore been considered con-sidered doubtful, are now set dosrn as certain to vote for it. The vote on its final ratification will be" taken, on Tuesday at the Jarthest. The discussion discus-sion of tbe treaty, while, in committee of the. whole, - has been of a general character, and confined mostly to members mem-bers of the foreign relations committee, and Sumner and I'rumbull have not participated to any extent in the debate. de-bate. The objections . offered have been mostly to the articles relating to the Ahibamn claims and the fi-heries. Mr. . C.asserly took the ground that the whole treaty was a disgraceful compromise, com-promise, both of the national interests and honor, but his ultra views met with no response ij ok the Democratic sidts. Advices received in "Washington by prominent Senator s, in regard to the way in which the treaty has been received re-ceived in England are not very flattering. flatter-ing. It is stated that it will be strenuously stren-uously opposed both io the Council and in Parliament, and,- if successful, it will result jn the overthrow of the present British ministry. -Butler condemns tlie Treaty. Butler "appeai'd before the legislative committee com-mittee on federal relations, to-day, and read a letter, making a twenty-four pago pamphlet, which he had addressed to his son-in-law, Senator Ames, of Mississippi, in which he elaborately reviews re-views and generally condemns the Treaty of Washington. A man named Selam stabbed another named Dunn, last night. The latter is in a critical condition, the wound bleeding internally and liable lo result fatally at any time.
