Show 1VHV WO.HKN FALL. ( The " social evil" is not confined, by a great deal, to the places where it exists ex-ists in its more puolio manifestation. I A wnile ago, having some curiosity to ascertain if the "personals" in the ciuuday Tribune were bona fide, and, if so, wuat was ihe chaiacter of those thus advertising, I answered four of ihein. Iu due lime I received replies, with the following result : . Xo. 1 A widow who keeps a boarding-house ou M ichigan avenue, about 30 years of age, with.one child; xo. 2 A young woman ou V abash avenue, near Twenty-second street, about 22 years old; No. 3 A widow on one of the "Courts," . between be-tween Wabash and Michigan avenues, about 32 years of age, with three children; child-ren; No. 4 A married woman residing ou aouth fark avenue, about 3d, with a sickly husband aud no children. All wauted about the same thing a "friend," who could assist them the young lady and the married lady spoke of dress particularly. So much for that one experiment, which I assure you is literally true. Nuw the organ of this class of people is publishing tbese "Personals" all ihe time especially every Sunday. . The facts 1 have related go to show that the "evil" is fearfully prevalent aU over the city, and indicate a state of morals not of the most favorable kind. Oue result of my investieations on this subject is to lead me to the conclusion conclu-sion that the passion for dress and display dis-play is the cause of a larger portion of the evil than any one thing. . I am thoroughly convinced that more girls are seduced into a lifeof shame through a desire to keep up with the times in fashionable attire, than in any other way. In fact, I believe that three out of every five enter the gate that leads to destruction through the wiles of the tempter Fashion. Tne women themselves therefore, who run riot in the extravagance of dress are primarily more chargeable, in my opinion, with the existence and extension of the "social evil," than are the men.
