Show SELECTED. Swinging Around the Circle. The fruitful telegraph furnishes another sensational story, not of the massacre and turmoil of populatiuns, but a grand vortex and mael.-stroni situated on one side of the Great Salt Lake, which is supposed to be the outlet where the surplus waters of the- lake find a rapid exit. Coriune, the gentile town of .Ylormondom, has tlie honor of sending the dispatch, and Captain Hauna, of the schooner Pioneer, has the honor of furnishing the news-This news-This fearless navigator was scudding aloi:g on peaceful trade in lumber intent, in-tent, when suddenly, at a point opposite oppo-site Corinne, the frail bark was drawn into the '"immense maelstrom or stupendous stu-pendous whirlpool." The descent and ciicular motion were so great that the Pioneer was made to swing around the circle with "frightful velocity," and had not just at that moment a powerful power-ful breeze been wafted over the lake and swelled the sails of the natty craft, none of the galiant crew would be left to tell the tale. Beyond a large-sized scare,Oaptain Hauna the bold received no injury, and the Pioneer is as trim and taut as before she spun around in that yawning chasm of salt waters. The telegraph informs us that "a party of scientific men" were to embark em-bark on the steamer Kate Connor to investigate the subject. Unless the Kate's engines are in better condition to force her through the dashing waves than they were not long since, we would hardly care to be on her hurricane hurri-cane deck when she reaches the influence influ-ence of that terrible maelstrom! We shall be prepared at any moment to record the loss of the steamer or the perpetration of a huge hoax. F. Chronicle. |
