The river here rose twenty-five feet last night, and this morning it is wi'hin a foot of the Darvilie R. R. bridge, and Mayo street passenger bridge. The streets for four or five blocks in the vicinity of the old market are submerged in four feet water. Thousands are on the river banks waiting to see the bridges go. The lower portion of Libby prison took fire this morning, from a quantity of lime wet oy the flood. lhe fire was stopped before much damage was done. More Flooding. 'W heeiine, Va.. 1. Pi-patches from Harper's Ferry, it V.-i. , announce a great flood in the Shenandoah river. The lower portion of the town is completely com-pletely submerged. Mr.ny substantial iron and brick houses have been carried car-ried awiy, and a great number are rapidly crumbling. Over fifty lives have been lost, and a great many are in peril, wi-hout the possibility of help reaching them. |
