Show The American Tract SociETr. We were favored with a visit yesterday, yester-day, from Rev. Frederic E. Shearer, District Secretary of the American Tract Society for the Pacific coast. The object of his visit to our city is to put the works of the Society on sale, and especially those suitable for Sabbath Sab-bath school libraries, of which, we understand, a large number are already al-ready in the Territory. The Society docs an immense amount of printing, running regularly between twenty-five and thirty presses, which struck ofi' daily 4,100 volumes during the past year, besides an issue of serials reaching reach-ing 20,000 daily, and 2.3,000 tracts a day. The volumes are bound by the Society, are unsectarian, and Mr. Shearer proposes, to have them sold at New York prices. He will remain in town for some little time on this business, busi-ness, and we wish him every success during his stay. |
