Show A WOMAN WITH AN OSSIFIED FACE. To thise wh-j have never vish-.d :he hospitals ani a:-a:un-ic.l ir-ii u:s c: large cities there are coniitiocs ' the human mo'.i ani form divine. a i; is ol r'u.'y dcveloptfi and uche-alihi' proportions, pro-portions, harrowing and s'-XaLge, and of which their philosophy never dreamed. dream-ed. We saw yesterday at the Sr Vincent Vin-cent hospital, on South College street, a case a.most taxing credulity i:se.i'. The patient was admitted to the institution insti-tution on the vth of this month, and is on the list of pay patients, rihe is a Mrs. Carter, from Carro'l county. Some years since, near the close of the war, whi.e suffering as an invalid, she was sitting in her room beiore a glowing glow-ing fire. Suddenly a species of helplessness help-lessness came upon her, and she fell forward with her face upon a heap ol burning coals. Her entire face was bedded bed-ded on the heated tire. Unable to arise, she endeavored to scream, but theven voice was drowned in the tire, that smothered her breath, and was sucked in for air. Writhing in agony there she lay, burning and hcipiess, tili some of the famuy came to her relief. It is enough to make the marrow freeze in one's bones to think of the agony she must have endured during that torturous space of time. (Ju being removed, it was discovered that the face was literally burned away. The lips, the nose, the eyelashes were crL-ped, and the eyes themseives, so to speak, were iuverted. the recovered of the illness under which she was laboring at the time, and survived the foarful accident All mobility of feature, fea-ture, lineament of countenance and facial expression, however, are virtually virtu-ally obliterated by the eating tire. What is most singular is, that the face seems to have assumed a species uf ossification, and is hard, intlexabie and impenetrable to ordinary touch or puncture. She is under the treatment of Dr. W. T. Briggs, whose skill will, doubtless, yet make a vast change, if not a radical cure, in the case. Nashville Lnionatul American. |
