Speech Dave HTernpstead I Warms the People Up Chairman Dunbar Makes Some Appropriate Remarks Thomas Mariouaux and Clesson S Kinney Speak Music by the Youngberg Sisters Nearly 400 Democrats asembled at headquarters last evening and listened to Sanator Rawlins D P Hempstead and other speakers Plenty were turned away because they could not get seats but they patiently waited outside I out-side to catch fragments Mr Dunbar ceded the meeting Ito order or-der and made a telling address In openIng Among other things Mr Dunbar allude uded to the fact that an effort was being made to foist upon the people l a nonpartisan ticket The claim is being made that good government can iCt be obtained from partisan parties He could understand why Republicans should advance this argument because that party ha demonstrated Us iiubll I ity to give good government But he I Democrats have nee been given the opportunity of controlling the gven although I al-though they have given and ar giving I the county of Salt Lake City the test administration In the Line of economy I j ever had Mr Dunbar then presented present-ed Hon C S Kinney as chairman of the meeting SENATOR RAWLINS Mr Kinney made a few remarks of an ntroductory character and introduced I Hon Joseph L Ravvlins United States senator from Utah Mr Rawlins said we were confronted by peculiar conditions in this that Democrats Dem-ocrats ri being asked to abandon their principles and vote for a negative proposition The Democracy has declare I de-clare In its national platform for the free coinage of silver and the local con vention endorsed i The Republicans declared against silver in national ocn vention and the local meeting dared not endorse or condemn it The party which seeks your suffrages has sent commissioners to England to bee its leimission to coin ItS own product into money Can you who want silver afford af-ford to cast your ballets for that party Locally Mr Rawlins said that if there was any trouble anent the finances of this city there was but one arty to blame and that was the Republican Re-publican party The blame lies at its door and it should be held responsible Last year the people of this state endorsed en-dorsed the silver principle by a majority major-ity of 50000 This year when the people sent delegates dele-gates to the city convention they declared in favor of that same principle prin-ciple clpleow Now if the principle of the citizens reform party be correct how are the people to be recognized Of Course a half dozen men can get together and nominate a ticket No one denies that But what is the status of that parry What do they promise you Have they any principles beyond specious promises prom-ises For instance Mr Hills is a gold standard low tax free trade Democrat while Mr Lanran is a high protective Republican who has stood sponsor for the admintetration here for five years They represent I different principles Elect such men and they will quarrel over methods It is better to have a Republican administration than a mongrel mon-grel because one ia i an application of principles which can be rejected while the other is not and from Its actions where is the recourse Mr Rawlins said i had been said of Mr Dale that he had not been here long enough Tnis Is not a time to bring up I such matters He has come here with his wife and children and has become a part of us His interests are herewith here-with thousands of others who have helped build up the city No truthful I man ever looked him In the eye and said he was not true I is said he represents an investment company I here True He handles and has handled han-dled thousands and hundreds of thousands I thou-sands of dollars of money owned by men in distant states If he was not I honest he could not handle a cent or that money Mr Ravviins declared that Mr Dale could be trusted A few days ago we heard a voice from Indianapolis and another from Chattanooga They both declared for silver What shall Salt Lake City answer an-swer That we have selected i nondescript nonde-script a gold man or a free silver Democrat slver Following Mr Rawlins the Young berg sisters delighted the audience with one of their pleasing duets The audience audi-ence was pleased and wanted more mOle They got It Mr Kinney called attention to the fact that last year the Democrats rolled up 50000 majority in Utah for silver Salt Lake City contributed 3000 majority There is the milk in the cocoanut That is the reason why the Republican newspapers have combined to elect a mongrel ticket ha is why they combined in the cinching room of the Deseret bank and nominated a ticket The silver question is an issue DR MATTIE H CANNON Dr Hattie H Cannon was the next speaker Her address was specially interesting She alluded to the fact that science by discovering the cause of disease could prevent dissolution and prolong life Nations were something some-thing like men By discovering the cause of decay dissolution may be prevented pre-vented The Democratic party has raised up a physician in the person of William J Bryan and it is the duty of the people to stand by him Just as poor stormtossed Utah gets ready to divide on party lines and does divide we find ourselves afllicted with this nonpartisan malady Medicine knows some diseases which are prevented pre-vented from spreading by painting a ring of iodine around i When you go to the polls election day vote the Democratic ticket and Democratc tcket paint a ring or Iodine around the nonpartisan ailment ment lest it spread Because if permitted pr mitted to exist it may spread to the county and then to the state JUst mark an X up by the rooster arid let I go at that Utah is Democratic and always al-ways will be The motto should be Down with plutocracy and up with Democracy Dr Cannon sam Mr Caine had advised ad-vised us To think it over Well the women were thinking i over and would vote the Democratic ticket D B HEMPSTEAD D B Hempstead was the next speaker speak-er Dave made a rattling good speech The Republican partys position In this campaign seems to be to sustain the doctrine Of high taxation brings greatest prosperity But the others are not so consistent Their morning organ yells for purity in politics and then makes the dirty attack on the Democratic candidate for mayor Mr Hempstead refuted the allegation made by the Tribune concerning Dales gold notes Who made the charge Mr L S Hills Mr W S McCorniuk Mr John E Dooly Mr James Jennings and Mr R J Walker Jr who are nonpartisans non-partisans men who if you borrow J250 make you sign a gold note I looked i I like glass house inhabitants throwing stones Mr Hempstead nlud1 to the stiver tphase of the campaign The eyes of the uauon ate lurritu tln way nit goiu i ug Doremus and every gold paper in Christendom will shout in glee because Salt Lake McKinley has rejected silver and endorsed The nonpartisans say they will reduce re-duce taxes How idle a boast for them to make The rate this year Is the same as in 1895 and 1S9S The increase in tax has been brought about by the state authorities and the school board I I Mr Hempstead alluded to the eligi i billty of the various candidates in a happy way and made several allusions I which pleased the people Mr Thomas Marionaux then made a few remarks in which he perforated r the nonpartisan bankerine bubble and I made several happy hits The meeting then adjourned with I I three cheers for the Democratic ticket I I |
