pacing stallion this I afternoon reduced the worlds pacing record to a four wheel sulky by nearly four seconds The record was established estab-lished at Ingalls Park track before 2700 people who had been attracted by the announcement that Star Pointer Poin-ter would go against both the wason and high wheel sulky records amI that Joe Patchen would try to beat his own record of 201 A few minor races completed the programme but the attraction was the progamme big pacers and when It was announced that Star Pointer was lame and that Owner Murphy had refused to let him fulfill hiS engagement there was much dissatisfaction But Mr Harks the owner of Joe Patchen agreed to let the black horse take Star Pointers place and high and go against the wagon wheel sulky and this announcement was greeted with loud applause A REMARKABLE MILE Previous to this about 3 oclock the great son of Jatehen Wilkes had gone a really remarkable mile in attempting to beat his own record of 20Ui Driven by Atkinson he went the circuit in 202 lowering the track record The time by quarters was 031 102 1321 tme and 202jt Several watches caught the I time in 2021h The horse was urged a great deal I in this heat but as he did not appear again until 4 oclock to make his trial I unt wagon or four wheel sulky record he was probably in well nigh perfect condition for the latter trial The wind too had died down to almost nothing and but for the cold atmosphere atmos-phere and the horses unfamiliarity with the vehicle it being the first time he had been hitched to a four wheel sulky this year the conditions for a great performance were propltous Oscar Os-car Ames was in the sulky in place of Atkinson owner lars having made a contract with the former trainerof Colonel Taylors horse during the afternoon after-noon AWAY HE WENT After scoring once Ames signalled for the word and away the big blkck i went with magnificent stride and with the running mate trailing a length or two away Ames rated his charge splendidly l covering the first quarter in 032I skimming along the back stretch with the stallion moving easily in 31 Around the far turn the pacer faced the breeze whatever there was of it but it was here that Ames first urged him It was here too that the running mate drew along and responding to the call the noble Patchen aped over the third quarter in 30i seconds I was now a foregone conclusion that the record would be broken and outbursts of applause ap-plause began before the horse was Well straightened out for home Ames lthew I the staying powerot the horsei and never relinquished urging him by vtrice and an occasional H sharp crack ofthe whip Tne result was lit iasc iiuurner I was made in 030 the time o thelast I of the last half mile being 10114 and the great pacer finished strong and true geat nearly four seconds ahead of the record I rec-ord Time204i The former record is held by W W P having been made at 8t Paul in 1S35 I THE SECOND TRIAL I Joe Patchen appeared fairy tired after I I af-ter the trial but nevertheless he was I taken to the stable rubbed down and i prepared for his trial against the hIgh j wheel sulky record The general Verdict sUIy I dict was he would not be able t repeat I his record breaking although the wheel I held by Johnston is 2OPtml and < the I I black would not need to go va las as 1 his mile to the wagon in order to win It was 515 p m when the horse came on the track hitched to the big wheeled I I sulky which had been made especially i I for Star Pointer After two scores Ames signalled for the word and they were sent away the runner trailing as before The quarter was reached in 032JA the same time as made in the 1 trial with the wagon but the second I quarter showed a decrease of speed the time being 10lt The three quarters quar-ters was reached in 1S5 fiat and the mile in 206 half a second short of then the-n ord This however beats the best efforts made by John R Gentry this eIorts season against the same mark During the afternoon Star Pointer was jogged in front of the stand His leg was injured at Indianapolis some weeks ago and again hurt at St Joe on Oct 7 THE OTHER FEATURE Another feature of the
