Show 1 INDIANS ARE SOLLffl CHIEF CHAVFJNEATJX IS TRYING TO FOMENT TROUBLE His Followers Refuse to Work Any Mvre and Threaten to Go On the WarpathSun Dance Wednesday Vernal June GIt has been learned I that artbther cause of the discontent that has been manifest amon the Indians In-dians on the lower agency lately chief I among whom is Charley Chavencaux arises from the expressed intention of Agent Cornish to revise the rolls As is no doubt the case on all reservations reser-vations there are a great many dead Injuns drawing rations When an Indian In-dian dies his name is not stricken from the roll 35 one might naturally suppose sup-pose and his annuity continues to be paid to the tribe As it is a well known fact that the TTtes are rapidly decreasing in numbers it is readily understood that the surviving sur-viving members of the tribe will fare better as they become fewer if they continue draw rations and annuities I for the orisrinal number From what can be learned it seems that the agent expressed the intention of correcting this state of affairs which angered old Chaveneaux and his followers fol-lowers and they propose to call a halt in the march of Indian civilization until un-til he matter is settled satisfactorily Ihey refuse to do any more work and say they will fight if necessary to maintain their position in the matter mat-ter It is not believed however that tho matter will get beyond ugly lool sand s-and actions as the Indians realize the hopelessness of their making much resistance re-sistance Inasmuch as the same state of affairs as pertains to the rolls is supposed to exst on other reservatfons it is the ormion of a great many people among then some of the agency officials that ti rti sJon should be made general or not at all as to enforce it in one case and not in another looks like partiality partial-ity to the Indians and that is the way i they view it i I Other advices from the reservation state that the Indians at the upper I agency are making great preparations for the big sun dance next Wednesday Wednes-day I I Formerly this dance was observed with g Eat ceremony and was attended attend-ed by many exhibitions of wild barbarism bar-barism Whipping themselves and slashinr their flesh with knives was sme of the milder features of the dance These little eccentricities are now forbidden by the agency officials and the sun worship will no doubt be confined to any amount of whooping and whirling to the racket of the tom toms There will be several Vernalites over to view the ceremony and take items |
