Show When riots occur in this country and the militia must be employed to suppress sup-press them we are apt to think that such affairs are handled much more promptly and successfully by the military mili-tary powers of Europe says the Philadelphia Phila-delphia Ledger But the troubles In Prague and other parts of the Austrian empire are not handled in a manner consistent with any such theory No riots in this country not even those incident to the great railroad strike of 1892 were ever so inefficiently dealt with by the government as are those which are now disturbing the peace of Austria There the strong police force is unable to disperse the rioters and even the army is powerless to suppress them Here in most cases the state militia is allsufficient and even they need only make a show of force without with-out actual violence while in the few cases where the regular army is called into service the presence of a very small detachment of it is quite enough to restore order Mobs are ugly things to deal with In any country but our governments state and national seem to cope with them at least as effectually effectual-ly and with as little trouble and blood i shed as those of any other countries in the world |
