Show I AN IBBIGATlON SCHEME I Which May Bring Waste Land Under Cultivation Vernal May 8H S Collett returned yesterday from a trip to the Uncom pahgre country where he went to look over the ground with a view of determining deter-mining the feasibility of irrigating some of the lands which have recently been opened to settlement As has been stated in The Herald on a former r occasion there is some fine bench land irrigated now open which can be iri gated from the Uintah and Duchesne rivers i permission coma be obtained to construct a canal across that portion of the ground that is located within the lines of the Ujntah reservation There was it seems a act passed I that gives the secretary of the Interior I the authority to grant such a permit but the authority has a yet not been exercised at least as far as the Uin tah reservation Is concerned Thus far the department has shown a disposition to frown upon any scheme looking to the reclamation of lands lying adjacent to the reservation lines The department accepting the view that the Uintah reserve consists of all the territory drained by the Duchesne and its tributaries fixes the eater line along the crest of the ridge just east of the Uintah river rver The ridge is scarcely more thantL mile from the river for some distance along that stream and this narrow I that stands in strip is the only barrier stnts I the way of the reclamation of thousands thous-ands of acres of fine bench land I is understood that Mr Collett and his associates will make an application for a grant of the right of way for a canal across the reservation land and 1 + 1 o I lU me jtLiius lying uuiaiuc un u its3 and in view of the fact that congress does not look with favor upon the opening of the Uintah reservation it will attend their is hoped that success w1 atend efforts I may be the opening wedge I which will make a way to bring under cultivation much good land otherwise a barren waste for some time at least or until the administration undergoes a change of ideas |
