Electric Power Hole intheWall Desperadoes on the Iffove Exciting Scene In n Carson Court A Laramle Wyo correspondent gives the following interesting description of Green Rivers soda wells An important new industry inddent to the discovery of the sal soda wells is now ODeninc up in this state The principal wells are located at Green Rive and the supply is thought to b exhaustible As thp importations of soda and soda compounds amount to about S6COOOOO every year and the soda industry in the United States is rapidly Increasing competent judges dam that there will be a good demand for the entire product of the Green River wells even if worked to their greatest capacity The wells were ds covered t > y accident in 1895 while prospecting pros-pecting for oil lands adjacent to the town of Green River In boring for oil at a dept of 120 feet the drill struck what wa supposed to be a bed of soap which on investigation was found to be a white substance that boiledupout of the well like soap suds when the drill was in ooeration The discovery was not considered of any importance however how-ever and drilling was resumed until 600 feet had been reached The prospectors pros-pectors beirir unsuccessful in finding 1 and not caring to waste any fur thor time in the soap business aban doned the work In the following win ter water oozed up over the top of the well leaving a white deposit about four inches thick on the frozen ground A young chemist thirsting for knowledge by chance visited the well one day and discovering the white deposit decided i makean analysis when to his surprise sur-prise he found i to be carbonate of soda chemically pure He confided cnfded his discovery to several older and more experienced chemists who gravely shook their heads and looking gayely at the bold youth who had had the timidity ti-midity to come and tell them t thing they happened not to know said sad Young man you are mistaken Car bonate of soda has never been pro duced pure by nature and can only b made from salt brine after ten consecu tive treatments Samples of the water from the well were sent to chemists in Salt Lake Cheyenne Denver Omaha Washington and other cities and in every case the analysis showed over 23 per cent of sal soda crystals In 1896 a complete examination of the well and its product was made toy Professor Wil Bur C Knight of the state university who reported that the water contained 464 pounds of sal soda to the ton and that the property could be made one of the best paying in the state in the way of a mane mal it investment An option a secured on 40 acres of the land by John F Waters of Chicago who became interested in the soda well after a visit to this section and two wells were sunk under his direction to a depthof 225 feet each The wellssit uated about 100 yards from the banks of Green river were cased so that sur fac river water should not flow into them Durin the month of Deem bpI last a steam pump with a ca imcitv of 60000 gallons every 2 hours was In constant use in the wa constant e wells the result bhowincr that the water at all times ran from 23 to 25 per cent in pure sal soda Constant pumping failed to reduce the water in the wells which stood uniformly at ten feet from the surface r surace Geologists who have examined the u property claim that the ground to a t depth of 300 feet is filled with soda and I that the water in percolating through the earth takes up the soda The company com-pany ownIng the land a tract of 200 acres intends to erect a plant which F will have a capacity of 25 tons of caustic I t caus-tic soda daily As the product sells k in Chicago at an average price of 1 40 a ton and jan 8 freight rate ca be 5 made from Green River to Chicago t and correspondingly low correpondingl rates to Salt Lake City Denver and Omaha i will ue readily seen that the prospects for a t big paying industry are excellent and payns indlstry excelent ad t the Green River district to secure yet greater benefits and also the geater neftsan als state by t so important and valuable a chemical discovery I is saidt that there is no other known place upon the ace of the globe t which produces this quality of soda i Idaho Grangeville Press The busIness of 1 the United States land office for the month ending July 31 1897 shows the following transactions Homestead entries f en-tries 52 final home
