Show 1 KEENE IWWASllINGTON Heartily Welcomed at the Catholic University Washington Aug 16 Archbishop teeene who is here from Rome paid a visit today to the Catholic university with which he was so long identified as rector He waS most cordially welcomed by the faculty and those students remaining remain-ing through the lecess The archbishop says that hs isit to America is in pursuance of a purpose expressed before going to Rome to come to this countn each year and he expresses regret at I recent rerots to the effect mat his coming would inaugurate a controversy between church factions He said today There are no factons in the Roman church and I am grieved and hurt by the publication of sensational articles which are without foundation in anyway any-way and which are not only unkind but are almost indecent It is very unfortunate un-fortunate that a gentleman cannot pay a I visit to the country he loVes so dearly without being made the subject of a quantity of gossip that is simply pestiferous pesti-ferous I came as I had always proposed I pro-posed to see mry friends and to attend the meeting at the Catholic university I cannot help expressing my indignation at the unwarranted manner in which so I many of the newspapers have seen fit to place different purpose upon it The archbishop expressed much satisfaction satis-faction with his duties in Rome The statements that he had been a candidate for the archbishopric of New Orleans made vacant by the death of Archbishop Jannsans are explicitly denied On the other hand the archbishop hasT has-T < that his name be omitted from the list nominated by the bishopS of New Orleans archbishopric and sent to Rome Disregarding this request the bihops have signified their high regard for Archbishop Keene by placing his name at the head of the list of three names from whIch Rome will make the final selections The friends of the archbishop arch-bishop are sincerely hopeful that the final choice will riot fall upon him as they desire that he shall continue in his important lost 1It Rome at least until amore a-more northerly bIshopric shall be open |
