| Show The Jew York Commercial Advertiser Adver-tiser says The reason for the proposed pro-posed creation of a department of commerce com-merce and manufactures Is not QuIte apparent The authors of this project say themselves that the new department depart-ment would be hardly more than a consolidation con-solidation under one head of certain offices of-fices already in existence and as it probably would not be allowed to act decisively In any important matter without the authority or consent of congress it is difficult to see what practical prac-tical end would be served by the establishment estab-lishment of It On the opposite hand another executive department would mean another member of the cabinet a body already sufficiently large for harmonious har-monious councils and action It is a question whether any good object was promoted when the bureau ofagricul ture was raised to a department Every one of course desires to see the Interests Inter-ests of commerce and manufactures advanced ad-vanced but the success of these so far as the government can influence them depends chiefly upon the sort of tariff and financial legislation adopted American Industry and trade have developed de-veloped marvelously In the absence of a soecial paternalistic oversight at Washington and ther wUl doubtless continue do so under like conditions in the future The bureau of agriculture never should have been raised to the dignity of a department The head of this department de-partment is now engaged in suoerin tending the packing and shipping of a ton and a half of butter to England The head of the department of cwm merce and manufactures might emulate emu-late this noble example and siiDerm tend the packing of a crate of crockery for shipment to some foreign country There are already enough departments and no more should be created |
