Show IIAPEHS S TRmUTf Hf SON CITIZENS ASSEMBLE IN HONOR OF LIEUTENANT PEARSON Resolutions Read and Adopted With I I Great Fervor and Enthusiasm I His Father and Mother Present From The Heralds Correspondent Draper May 26A grand patriotic I meeting was held here last night One object was to commemorate the Manila Ma-nila victory in which a Draper boy took Dart and another was to encourage encour-age the patriotic feeling in the hearts I of the people At S oclock the crowd had filled the opera house which was decorated lavishly and aporopriately for the occasion Among the prominent promi-nent citizens upon the stage were noticed I no-ticed Henry Pearson and wife Andrew Pearson and Mrs Annie Fitzgerald the parents brother and sister of Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Pearson Senator D O Ride out Postmaster Nielsen Bishop W C Allen Peter N Garff Thomas Vaw dry P P Sorenson and Mesdames Nellie Brown Matiide Boberg Dezzie Andrews Sara Burnham Music was furnished by the Oreill band salutes were fired at intervals I outside by the Draper dynamite artillery i ar-tillery The programme was led by prayer and singing the national hymn Chairman Sorensen stated the object of the celebration and called attention i to the relation Deweys victory bore to Draper reviewing the military struggles strug-gles of the past in which this republic had engaged spoke of the Maine disaster I dis-aster the Cuban problem and wound up with a description of the neatest I naval achievement the world at Ma nlla in which Lieutenant Pearson had taken part At the close of his remark the following resolutions were present Pi 1 hv > tnmmlttPp Whereas the United States for the cause of human liberty Declared war upon the kingdom of Spain and pursuant pur-suant to such declaration the greatest naval victory of the world was won by our Oept at the harbor of Manila May 1 J598 and Whereas Such victory was the direct result of the unrivalled generalship of that uncrowned king of the seas Admiral Ad-miral Dewey supported by the brave and efficient officers and men at his command and Whereas One of our boys a representative repre-sentative of Utah is one of those whoso so ably and fearlessly maintained the supremacy of our Hag and the honor of the nation one of those who offered their lives a sacrifice on the altar of country therefore be it Resolved That the people of Draper in mass meeting assembled send greeting greet-ing to Lieutenant Henry Allen Pearson 1 I approve his course commend him for his valOr honor him for his worthiness and at the throne of grace offer fervent prayers for his safe keeping These resolutions were formulated by Hon D O Rideout jr Miss Nellie Brown and Mr Thomas Vawdry Miss Brown read them and it was with great feeling and enthusiasm they were received and adopted The nest speaker was Bishop W C Allen who being a relative reviewed the life of Lieutenant Pearson and said it was the taking of good advice and a lot of perseverance that had advanced ad-vanced him to where he is Senator D O Rideout jr said Draper was rather slow in some things hut she trot there lust the same and with both feet When he heard such inspiring airs as The Starspangled Banner he wished he was a soldier He spoke of inspiration the sight of Old Glory gave to the soldier sailor and citizen in time of war Although Draper had not furnished any volunteers volun-teers as yet still he thought she was just as full of them as the rest of the woods He reviewed the present war the sufferings of the Cubans through Spanish misgovernment Then he spoke of the rapid rise through perseverance of Lieutenant Pearson whom he thought had undoubtedly performed his duty well He referred to the battle bat-tle of Thermopylae where Leonidas was slain with his 500 and said that thousands of Americans were as willing will-ing to lay down their Irves in the same manner for freedoms cause Henry Pearson Esq thanked the people in behalf of his son of whom he gave a short biography from his earliest school days up to the present I relating several interesting incidents of voyages and travels An old schoolmate of Lieutenant I Pearsons Mr B J Stewart spoke He was glad to meet so many people in I his birthplffie assembled to honor an I other native son Honor to Henry Pearson said he and double honor to his father and mother He congratulated con-gratulated the town on having produced pro-duced three such men as Lieutenant Pearson Senator Rawlins and Senator Rideout Other sneakers were Mr Thomas Vawdry and P U Garff Mrs Sarah Burnham sang a solo Miss Dezzie Andrews recited The Veteran Vet-eran and Nephi Vawdry rendered Rally Round the Flag Interspersed through the programme were songs by the audience and music by the band After America raised the rafters the hall was cleared and a dance was begun which lasted till morning JEAN FIGARO |
