Show ENGINEERS AND IMMUNES ENGIS A Plan of Organization Decided JBy the i I Government Washington May 2The regulations regula-tions for the organization of the brigade brig-ade of engineers and the ten regiments of immune authorized by separate act of congress were today formally agreed I upon by General Miles and Adjutant General Corbin Recruiting will begin I promptly with a view to the utilization of the men in the army of occupation of Cuba The brigade of engineers is to be comprised of three regiments to be designated United States volunteer engineers There are to be three battalions bat-talions in each regiment of four companies com-panies each For each regiment there are to be 53 commissioned officers and I 1106 enlisted men The officers will be I selected for their skill a military I I civil electrical mechanical or topa graph engineers An effort will be I mad to recruit the enlisted men from every branch of the engineering profession fession and of mechanical skill Machinists Ma-chinists steam engineers blacksmiths carpenters plumbers topographers telegraphers draughtsmen photograph ers railroad men riggers boatsmen and those skilled in the use of explosives explo-sives are especially desired Volunteer englnee troops will be armed and equipped as infantry Their uniform will conform to that prescribed for the use of engineer troops of the I regular army engneer I The men composing the Immunes I are expected to be recruited largely I i from the south They are to be organ orgn ized into regiments half of whom will I be composed of whites and the other regiments of colored persons They will be made up as far as practicable 1 of officers and men who owing to their origin the places of their residence and other circumstances affecting their physical characteristics possess immunity I immu-nity or are likely to be exempted from diseases incident to tropical climates |
