those here are enjoying 1ut themselves Up to6 oclock this evening even-ing 2612 league men had registered at headquarters Tonight a minstrel show was given at Englishs opera house for the wheelmen wheel-men and their ladies and an allnight smoker with vaudeville programme is on at the park The pioneer banquet occurred oc-curred at the Grand hotel tonight Broken records two in number and surprises in everv contest ruled the races of the first day of the national meet I The circuit men held their own but met defeat in the championship contest con-test at the hands of a man who has continually been among the also rans on the circuit and who had piled up only eight points in a seasons work in the championship Owen Kimble Old Kaintuck proved the omile champion of America Amer-ica and his win of the great contest was of the cleanest order and just beyond the slightest shade of a doubt Major Taylor Bald Cooper and < Mer tens ran in the order named at the rear of the great man from Louisville The finish of the championship was a shifting shift-ing race Two pacemakers pulled the ren around and Cooper Taylor Kim Die and Bald held the pace in the order mmed I was just as the second of the single pacemakers dropped out that r Mertens tried a run away and failed Bald catching his rear wheel There he kung and the others followed in their order then Cooper went past at the bell and gained the front Major Taylor Tay-lor gave Cooper battle and took the lead and Kimble started from the back of the bunch Down the back stretch he gained the side of the bunched field I and on the bank cut down to the pole I was there that the battle really began be-gan and Taylor held the pole while Kimble fought just a half wheel length to the good Bald was right at the rear wheel of Kimble and Cooper was at the side of Bald Mertens quit when the field sailed around him and the four game riders fought i out all don I the stretch They finished at about the positions named above and in world record time 405 for single paced work I Kimble was married only last Monday Mon-day at Louisville His win took him up in the points table to a tie with Bald and Major Taylor all three men now having 69 points with Cooper at 65 points and Gardiner the former leader fifth with 63 The twomile championship and half mile championship for amateurs both went to George H Collett of New Haven Ha-ven who proved the undoubted king in the amateur class Cramer of Newark and Hausman the tandem mate of I Collett and Joe Rogers the Philadelphian Philadel-phian carried away the honors no western amateur being able apparently apparent-ly to hold his own against them I MULTICYCLE HANDICAP But the contest in the twomile national na-tional championship and the worlds record were overshadowed in interest by the multicycle handicap in which a tandem team three triplet teams and three quad teams competed Becker VMertens Martin and Nat Butler the Cratch team won They started up to the front in the long line which formed early in the contest and the Johnson recordholding triplet team record 141 gave i a good race The finish was hairraising but not close the interest and the excitement occurring as the teams shifted around for position while ing at worldrecord gait The Johnson John-son Monroe and Fernwalt triple team gained second and the Major Taylor fiplet team gained third The time i 25 35 broke the record of 352 and Citra prize money was awarded to the I t winning team Another record for the track was I narrowly missed in the morning when Major Taylor made a wonderful ride to victory in the mile handicap in 00 13 the mark of Sims being missed bv but onefifth of a second Taylors riding of the cay in heats semifinals and finals was a feature The attend fnals atendI ance
