| Show I THE WORRY MR DOW Guards Will l Charge Him With Not Doing His Duty PROSPECT OF A WARM TTTVTR AHEAD FOR MR DOW Alleged That He and His Deputy Were Both Absent at the Same Time Contrary to the Rules How i I I Hamilton Made His Escape and Who Was to BlameSomething Calculated to Shake the Wardens Equnanimity There is going to be war at the penitentiary peni-tentiary I Not that the convicts are going to arise and make a protest against the I food supplied for that is all right but the guards and employees object to the methods employed by Warden Dow and Deputy Warden Wright It seems from statements made to reporter for this paper that charges are about to be preferred against the warden for violating the rule which provides that either he or his dermty shall be on duty at the state prison ail the time It is asserted that he will be charged with frolicking down In the city with his deputy during the Jubir lee knowing the institution was in the hands of a subordinate This is not all It is asserted that a system of espionage is employed at the penitentiary which does not comport with dignity at all That trusties are engaged in spying upon the guards reporting re-porting their conversations and the I like to the warden and his deputy all of which is prejudicial to the preservation preserva-tion of good order prison discipline and peace of mind in the hearts of men who work for 75 per month 12 hours I a day etc etc etc It will be shown that the escape of Hamilton the convict who got away some three or four weeks ago was not due to the relaxation of vigilance of Henry Shurtliff who was suspended for a month for the offense but was due to the changing of a rule by the warden It is stated that some time before the escape of Hamilton It was the duty of two of the inside bulls to carry the ash can to the gate where I I it was taken by two trusties an Iron bar jammed down into the contents for the purpose of seeing if anyone was I inside and then by them taken to the dump This rule was altered so the two cons on the inside took the canto can-to the gate and through the gate and then to the dump where Mr Hamilton the gay and festive thanked his rescuers res-cuers and ambled away I The bar was jammed into the mess as usual but the convicts knew whereto where-to jam without hurting their partner and they jammed accordingly Then they threw Hamilton over the bank Shurtliff was inside when the can was carried out but i was not his duty to go cutside and watch who crawled out of the garbage but he was suspended just the same and when this matter comes up he will have a chance to tell his story This rule has been modified since to the effect that the warden selects the men who carry the can and the worst 1 element is blocked out One of the guards threw up his job on Friday It was C J O Irwin who has been working there for some time I It is said that others are likely to follow |
