| Show UTAH WANT KLONDYKE G OLB L Local Syndicate Sends A La Fave to the Diggings r IS WELL FITTED FOR THE EXPEDITION A Revenue Cutter Will Protect the Portland Statement Prom the General Land Office Concerning the Land and Mining Laws In AlaskaLabor Bureau Will Send an Expert to the Yukon Country Gold Seekers Incensed By the Collection < < of Duties After having only 48 hours notice ALa A-La Fava the veteran mining man packed up his bedding and a few tools last night and joined the procession of goldseekers who are now en route to tir Klondyke gold fields in Alaska M Da Fava goes to the far month in the nterest of a strong local syndicate which is very largely comprised of experienced ex-perienced mining men and there Is every ev-ery reason to believe that he will succeed suc-ceed in that treasureladen country if anyone will as he is inured to hardships hard-ships and vicissitudes of every description fr descrip-tion besides which he is one of the best posted mining men to be found in this western country while his integrity is undoubted Mr La Fava is only one day behind C L Preble and W D Yingst who left for Portland Friday night and who expect to sail on the 13th inst so that ii is likely that these three Salt Lakers wil have for company a number of Colorado friends who passed through Salt Lake on Friday of this week It is the intention of Mr IMFava Ito outfit at Juneau and there he will lay in a goodly store of supplies as he proposes to go into the gold diggings thoroughly equipped with everything necessary to the success of the enterprise enter-prise From Juneau Mr La Fava is u decided de-cided as to what route he will take to the Klondyke but it is mote than likely that it will be the overland road that he will choose as he is of the opinion that eveift if th e is snow it will be a I dry snow whic will be more desirable than the wet and slush incident to spring travel At any rate he will be among the first to pitch his tent in the great gold camp and it will be no summer sum-mer outing tent either as he is taking with him 60ounce duck canvass from which he will construct a shelter when desired He is an old hand at this business and will be able to push his way through when others less used to inclement weather and steep and mountainous rOads and paths would I fail In this enterprise Mr La Fava will paddle his own canoe as he will have no partner or special companion and its j I it-s likely that he may push on ahead of the procession and be among the first of the newcomers to enter the marvelously L marvel-ously rich diggings of the Klondyke region WILL WRITE FOR THE HERALD Mr La Fava has kindly consented to I correspond for The Herald during his absence and whatever he writes maybe may-be taken as gospel truth as his word has always been as good as his bond In starting out on this enterprise he has unbotnded faith in its ultimate outcome as he is satisfied that the yellow metal exists in quantities corresponding cor-responding with the reports sent out by j > N JI14 < u A LA PAVE WHO STARTED FOR THE KLONDYKE YESTERDAY 1 is From i photograph taken when he was on a prospecting trip I the Associated Press and from advices received from miners who have made their fortunes there Of course he has formed no opinion regarding the formations of that region although he is inclined to believe that the deposits of auriferous gravel were formed by glaciers In his search for gold he will give due attention to quartz ledges as well as placer diggings and his first report of his impressions of the camp will be awaited with interest by his friends in tha city La Fava is of French extraction and was born in this country He is 521 years of age tall and wiry and of muscular build For ten years prior to I embarking in the mining business he was engaged in lumbering in the Lake Superior regions In 1877 he went to work in the Lake Superior mines In 1879 he went to Leadville Colo where he remained for two years during which time he was the discoverer of the Holy Cross mining district Since 1SS1 he has been engaged in mining inn in-n arly every state in the west and has pursued his search for wealth from the Canadian line down in Old Mexico and in his capacity as an expert has examined thousands of mining properties prop-erties in this and other countries He speaks several languages fluently including in-cluding English French Spanish German Ger-man and Chippewa Indian > Mr La Fava is a firSt lass man to send out on such an expedition and it is reasonable suppose that the syn Continued on PaGe 2 C 0 U cl |
