A GRANt JURY INDICTS THE COURT Tremendous Sensation Stirred Up at Leadville MAYOR IS ALSO AMONG THE VICTIMS RESULT OF JUDGE OWERS REPORt RE-PORt CRUSADE The Judge Summoned a Special Grand Jury to Suppress Gambling Gamb-ling and Prostitution and Finds Himself Under Indictment For Neglect of Duty Aldermen County Commissioners and Other Officials Indicted Leadville Colo July SL The day has been full of sensations In court circles Two weeks ago District Court Judge Owers delivered a strong charge to the grand jury he had summoned relative to the suppression of gambling and prostitution prosti-tution The charge was directly aimed at owners own-ers of buildings used for gambling and prostitution and alleged that prominent police officers were guilty of renting houses for these purposes Judge Owers charge also demanded an Investigation of the practice of the city in collecting licenses for prostitution and ambling The jury as selected consisted of prominent promi-nent busness men and three ministers and It uyis an open secret that the jury was not In sympathy with the judge in his action Today the juiiy handed in an elaborate report and with it some 40 indictments most of them against county officers There are two against Judge livers for failure to enforce the law azalnst gambling prostitution and Sunday opening open-Ing also against the sheriff against the county commissioners for tratnckinsr in warrants against the present mayor Dickinson and former Mayor Nicholson for failure to do their duty to enfore the laws and against the present and former boards of aldermen for alleged neglect of duty Judge Owers after the report of the jury made an extended statement alleging alleg-ing that the report was intended as a deliberate insult to the court and that the jury had failed In its duty by neglectIng neglect-Ing to Indict owners of buildings and certain cer-tain police officials The entire proceedings proceed-ings have stirred up a tremendous sensation sensa-tion and there is no telling where It will end endAFTER
