Show i UTAHS tGHTHOUR lAW CAStS TO BE ARGUED I u S SUPREME COURT THIS MONTH It Comes Second on the Lit of Assigned signed Cases Court Will Convene on Next Monday Docket Contains Unusually Large Number of Important Im-portant Cases I Washington Oct 5The October term of the United States supreme court will begin next Monday There are now 466 cases on the docket as against G16 at the beginning of the October Oc-tober term in 1SOS of which 3S3 came over from the last term and 83 have have been added during the courts vacation va-cation caton According to long usage the first duty of the term will be an official call upon the president If he is in the city on Monday and no other public business will be transacted on that day Tuesday Tues-day the argument of cases on the regular reg-ular docket will begin and the course followed until the second Monday of the term the 18th inst when the court will take up the hearing of cases advanced ad-vanced on the docket and assigned for that date of which there are 19 tlt The first of the assigned cases is that of the Man Bram charged with the murder of the captain the captains wife and the first mate of the barken tine Herbert Fuller at sea in July 1896 Then come the eighthour laws from Utah the case of he Pittsburg Cincinnati Cin-cinnati Chicago Railroad company vs the state of West Virginia involving involv-ing the question of taxation the case cf the New York Indiana vs the G United States involving rights under treaty a rehearing the Oklahoma case of Thcmms et a1 vs Gay et al involving in-volving the right of taxation in an Indian In-dian reservation the case of the United States vs the Joint Traffic association and others of less general importance The first case on the regular docket I for argument Is that of the city of New Orleans vs the Texas Pacific Railroad company which ulll probably b heard Tuesday next unless it i goes over for some cause Of the cases coming over from the last term 25 have been argued or submitted sub-mitted to the court and many of them may be finally disposed of any Monday after the first week of the term Some of these cases are of considerable importance im-portance among them being the Nebraska Ne-braska maximum freight rate case involving in-volving the right of a state legislature to fix a freight rate beyohd which the railroads cannot go in their charges the Southern Pacific Railroad company vs the state of California the disposition disposi-tion of which will determine the title to several hundred thousand acres of land the Westlnghouse brake case involving the validity of patents of the Westinghouse company for applying the all brake to Ions trains the case of the interstate commerce commission vs the Alabama Midland railroad involving in-volving the long and shorthaul clause of the interstate commerce law = e |
