Show XHE SUDDEN CRY POS NONPARTISANSHIP NONPAR-TISANSHIP I The nonpartisan movement in municipal mu-nicipal affairs appears to be taking very well throughout the state says the Tribune Hardly so well as our neighbor would have the people believe But what is l the necessity for a nonpartisan non-partisan movement in municipal affairs throughout the state Is there such a condition f affairs In the cities and towns of the state as is pictured by the nonpartisans in their address as existing ex-isting in Salt Lake City Do the people peo-ple of Utah who live in the cities and towns in various uarts of the state divide vide themselv into political parties merely fortnc sake of stealing from theIr locxi treasuries and that they may furn A1 places for party workers That Is what the nonpartisans charge < isalnst all who do not chooseto come and bow obedience at the beckand call of a few gentlemen who would arrogate to themselves the power to say who shall and who shall not be candidates for municipal office It has been said that the conditions which exist in Salt Lake City is what gave rise to tile nonpartisan movement move-ment In this city But the deplorable financIal condition of this city is not that of other cities and towns in the I state There has been no complaint by I heir citizens about extravagance and Mismanagement so how is it that they are in need of municipal reform movements move-ments Is it anticipatory There Is something about this cud len demand for nonpartisanship in municipal elections that arouses the suspicions of the people who have divided di-vided honestly on party lines They note the fact that only a few years ago they were urged to divide on party lines and they did Since then they have held municipal elections and never a word wa said about the desirability I oC nonpartisanship Is H strange that they now wonder why nothing but nonpartisanship non-partisanship in municipal elections will do They are given this reason and that reason but they were equally applicable ap-plicable at the last municipal election as well as at the present one When the people divided on party lines they did so after mature deliberation delibera-tion and because they were convinced that party government was the very I best thing for Utah And now the effort ef-fort is being made to convince them that nonpartisan government is the best thing for Utah People with political po-litical convictions are not to be deceived de-ceived or cajoled in any such waIt wa-It the people of Utah accept the theory the-ory that nonpartisanship is the proper thing in municipal elections how long will it bo before the same combination that is teaching this false and pernicious pernici-ous theory will be saying that nonpartisanship nonpar-tisanship is the thing for county elections elec-tions and for state elections And if it I is good for one election it is good for j Wall just as it is true that if party government I gov-ernment is good in state affairs it Is good In county and city affairs To in t ce nonpartisanship into the poll ticr it this state is to introduce an insidious in-sidious poison into it it is a step backward j back-ward and net a step forward It is reactionary re-actionary and not progressive it is a reversion to old conditions Instead of building up the new ones It is an old saying that when the fox preaches the I people should look out for their chickens chick-ens and this cry of nonpartisanship in municipal affairs Is nothing but the I I cachlng of the fox |
