Show lUVTlKICATIOX MEETING Itanalnpr Rally Held at the Opera House The rally in the opera house at night was a grand success The house was packed from pit to dome with a good I natured audience every person In the I audience being in favor of Bryan andi Sewall Helds band was In attendance and enlivened the programme Colonel Colo-nel A D Gash called the meeting to order and said we could well be proud of the work done by the convention I showed that there was enough patriotism pa-triotism to demonstrate that America was independent Applause Hon O W Powers was the first speaker He said in part You have come together to ratify what has been done here today The convention did that which no other convention has ever done The Democracy has raised above all party spirit and nominated men of all political parties but those men are each and all for the free coinage coin-age of silver Judge Powers referred to the nomination nom-ination of Bryan as the act of the peo pie Republicans and all could vote for him and rest assured that their confidence would never be misplaced i No man could ask for more tariff than 1 the Democratic platform declares for The speaker then referred to the income In-come tax and the audience cheered Judge Powers said a man could not accept I ac-cept and teach the doctrine of the Democratic platform adopted at Chi i Democratc platorm I cago and retain his standing in the i Republican party National platforms are what all people stand upon The speaker appealed to the people of i Utah to stand by the party and send I a Democrat to congress and not an i i unknown quantity i Sixteen young adies all drassed In i i white with silver stars dotting their i costumes and one lady representing gold fed on to the stage representing 16 to 1 They were received with I chers and applause and the audience arose and gave three cheers for 16 to l Hon David Evans of Ogden was then presented He said On yesterday I I was Mr Kings candidate today IrKing Ir-King is my candidate Mr Evans said I he would support Mr King as loyally as any man in Utah Cheers And I ask all my friends to do the same Mr Evans referred to 11 Bryan as having the logic of Franklin firmness of Jackson the fatherly love of Lincoln Lin-coln He made an eloquent speech on I the silver question and was listened to with clove attention I I Dr Mattie Hughes Cannon was introduced in-troduced and she made a good impression impres-sion on the audience She compared tMs nation to an individual ohlldhoo3 youth manhood and old age The I United Stases has not yet reached manhood man-hood and if they were allowed to go down now they will die a premature I death Cheers Hon H P Henderson said that Grover Cleveland was elected by the I Democrats and he would find out that I the party had servants hut no bosses I followed President Cleveland t through three campaigns and I trusted him as I never trusted any political leader before I have been disappointed disap-pointed in him as mover was dlsan pointed before This fight is to tell whether men or money rules this country coun-try I Mr McKinley Is elected more bonds must be issued I While Mr Henderson was speaking I the electric lights went out and left I the audience in total darkness but oil lights were at once brought and the audience kept their seats and Mr Hen derson continued with his very convincing con-vincing arguments Fisher S Harris was introduced amid cheers and applause He opened his brief speech with Flow anarchists anar-chists fellow repudlationists fellow bunco steerers This sally brought down the house Mr John M Zane came in for a share of the speakers flow of sarcastic I go tr ft t gon wit to the delight and n rt of the large audience Less than one year ago Johnnie siood upon this platform and said he was unalterably In favor of free coinage of silver without wait Ing for any other nation and within a very short time h0 comes again nd says he is unalterably opposed to free coinage Applause Mrs E La Barthe of Salt Lake was an interesting speaker She congratulated I congratu-lated the people of Provo aijd the Democratic party on the nominations made Joseph L Rawlins was called for but he was not in the house Mrs Margaret E Caine was introduced Intro-duced and said she was proud to call herself a Democrat in the face of hisses If necessary but today she was thrice proud to say she was a Democrat Demo-crat John T Caine was called for and he made one of his characteristic speeches HO congratulated the Democrats on the ticket named > f |
