Heavy NEW XORK Sept 16 There was no change today in the character of the stock speculation the most conspicuous feature being irregularity of movement and violently changing fluctuations The volume of business was quite heavy compared with recent averages and the dealings were very well distributed London was less bearish buying at least as much as it sold and the quotations t t quota-tions for American securities in that market were about equally divided between be-tween gains and losses The chief influences in-fluences bearing upon prices were unchanged I un-changed consisting of conjecture as to the gold export outlook the position of the bond syndicate and the banks toward to-ward the treasury and the probability or improbability of an issue of government govern-ment bonds in the near future The money market show d a rising tendency and fairly large sums were loaned on call at an advance of l1 s per cent above the quotations which had been ruling nominally for a long time past The exchange ex-change market was heavy being chiefly affected by the large gold exports and firmer rates The actual engagements of gold for export by tomorrows steamer amounted to only 1000000 The street was agitated from time to time by rumors of conferences of bank presidents presi-dents to discuss governmentfinancial re lid measures and of a meeting between the head of the bond syndicate and the treasury officials No deposits of gold were made in the subtreasury wsher for account of the syndicate or the banks A important item of news I escaped the notice of the Wall street community consisting of an advance in anthracite coal prices by the New York companies of 10 to SOc per ton Ii is certain that Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Curtis Conrad N Jordan and members of the firm of J P Morgan Co were in consultation The general conclusion drawn was that the business iix hand was th discussion of the government bond issue which the C street now believes to be near at hand No confirmation of this story could be obtained in official circles The grangers took up the largest share C of the dealings with the industrials asa as-a group good seconds In the initial I sales the bears made a demonstration C against the grangers and lowpriced I shares but soon extended the scope of their operations and brought about general gen-eral recessions Near > 1030 under the C leadership of Sugar the entire market advanced but about 1 oclock the market mar-ket became again weak Soon after mdday the bulls rallied in support of K the market and save for a slight recession r i reces-sion around 1 p m the advance was uninterrupted un-interrupted up to the close which was strong at about the best figures of the 1 vances day and prices generally showing ad I There was a moderate increase in the volume of business in bonds today the sales aggregating 2630000 The temper of speculation followed the stock mar ket ket Money on call in good demand at 2 2 per cent last loan
