Show STEAMER ON FIRE I STMlR FRI FR-I SEVEN PERSONS LOSE LIFE I > THE FLAMES Male I a ienRcr Aetcil in I VcTjt Cowim rut t Planner Tllaze Ex tiiiKtiishca After a Fight of Four Hours i LONDON Sept 16Ilre broke out on the steamer lana from Edinburgh to London today The flames spreal i with so much rapidity that before ail I reached the vessel six passengers and L the stewardess of the lona were burned to death The fire was put out after four hours struggle l I The fire broke out when the loan was off Clackton in the fore part of the vessel The passengers wer aroused and i was supposed all escaped es-caped from the burning cabin Whil the crew were fighting flames tbf soldiers on board assisted in lowering the iboats and supplying the passer gers with life beltsfc There was no wind and the sea was perfectly smooth There was however somE excitement and confusion among th passengers when It was disco er ° d that some women and children were missing The stewardess reentered the cabin to try to rescue them and she also perished The darkness and smoke issuing from the burning cabin combined to make it 3 terrible scene I was nor untl three compartments were burned that I became possible t enter the cabin where were discovered the charred remains re-mains of six women and one child Then the engines were started up again and the vessel proceeded on her way to London There are various rumors as to th origin of the fire Some passengers allege al-lege that the male passengers acted in a cowardly manner seeking first their own safety instead of assisting the women and children into the boats |
