Show DETECTIVE PAULS STORY J Emphatically Denies That lie Re J ccivcd Cent Front the County The little squib special from Denver Den-ver a few days ago regarding the presence pres-ence there of Adam Mallory a Salt Lake detective who was shadowing a prominent business man was evi Qently not written plainly ts it was Adam JMilri > y who was there The Adam Milroy in question was none other than Detective Adam Paul of this city who had charge of the task of peeing that Martin Hayken came to Salt Lake whether of his own volition or not Detective Paul was amply outfitted to Jure the famous witness here on 1tany pretexts that is to get him at i tany into Utah territory without ar r resL Among the schemes was a placer fi J Jl I > > gold affair at Green River which would take a California multimillionaire multimillion-aire away from a Sutro thampagne banquet one thousand miles into a desert des-ert waste to witness But it just so happened that the Job set up on Hay ken from this end was all sufficient to get him here During his stay of eight daye in Denver Den-ver where he was registered at the Oxford hotel near the Union depot Detective Paul had Hayken constantly constant-ly under his surveillance knew everyplace every-place he went and heard almost everything every-thing he said although Paul never spoke to him until he woke him up in berth No 4 at the Union depot and turned him over to Marshal Brigham and Chief Pratt In further conversation with Detective Detec-tive Paul during which he was asked many questions on many points he refused re-fused to commit himself or the secrets of his service in this affair except to most emphatically deny that he had ever received a cent from the county for his services that if the person who started this story would only go to Mr Paul with that assertion he might be convinced that he was laboring under an hallucination that would cause him insomnia I have never received nor have I asked for nor have I been offered or given one penny quarter or any denomination de-nomination of money for my services in the work to get to the bottom of this Andrews furniture deal The whole story is a lie pure and simple declared de-clared the detective A great many claims are made as to the ammunition the prosecution proposes pro-poses to fire off One is that they have the two checks or drafts by which the Andrews company is alleged to have paid the exselectmen boodle 1 It is also said that these will be presented pre-sented to the grand jury today if they have not already been presented Like the other rumors this one goes for what it is worth |
