Show STANFORDS ESTATE GOVERNMENTS CLAiai AGAINST IT IS FILED Suit IB For 15237000 While the Estate is Appraised at Hut 517000000 Including the University Uni-versity San Francisco March 15 Attorney L E McKissick the special United States district attorney appointed by Attorney General Olney to prosecute the governments claim against the estate es-tate of the late Leland Stanford filed the governments complaint in the United States circuit court here today The suit is for 15237000 The complaint com-plaint covers twenty sheets of typewritten type-written copy I recites the conditions under which the Central Paclfio Railroad road company was formed by Stanford Huntington Hopkins Crocker and others and asserts that at the time when the debt of the Central company com-pany to the government of the United States was incurred these four men were in control of all the capital stock of the company with the exception of a few shares turned over to servants and employees of the corporation Under the terms of the partnership between be-tween Stanford Huntington Hopkins and Crocker it is asserted that the estate es-tate of Stanford is liable for its one fourth share of the governments claim against the railroad or 15237000 The claims against Huntington and the Crocker and Hopkins estates are not brought into the present suit In conclusion con-clusion judgment against the estate in the sum stated is prayed for and it is demanded that Jane L Stanford the executor of the estate be ordered to pay the same out of the assets of the estate in due course of administration administra-tion and prior to all other claims The Stanford estate including the Stanford University property was appraised at about 17000000 The successful prosecution prose-cution of the governments suit would not only practically wipe out the estate es-tate but would wreck the university |
