Show DETTER LET IT ALONE The discussion over the Hawaiian cable project developes a wide difference differ-ence of opinion There are reasons of course why telegraphic comunlcation with the Islands would be beneficial to this country as well as Hawaii But it does not appear to us that these are sufficient to warrant the laying of a cable by the Government of the United States It 3s claimed that more United States ships touch at Honolulu every year than at any other port on the globe And that besides the commerce with the Hawaiian Islands there is a much Taster region beyond in Asia and that it is to the interest of the United States to establish just as quick comunication with that region as England now holds BO that the English will not be given that much advantage over Americans in the matter I mat-ter of trade with the Asiatic peoples Just at the present time it is argued there is a great opportunity to make a beneficial movement The east go Ipng bound up within itself by the trammels of tradition Is about to be freed V It has been for years the intention I inten-tion of the Japanese to awaken China to the benefits of civilization Just as they were awakened by the United States Admiral ErwIn who was In command of the Asiatic station before his retirement says that this Idea had taken the firmest hold on the minds of the Japanese people not the ministry but the common people Now that the time has come when Japan Is to be placed in a position to dictate part I of the terms that are mentioned are those that China shall Ue opened up toI I commerce V I If business energy once takes hold ion i-on the Celestial empire a vat region rich as well In mineral as agrJcuKuial wealth will be thrown open fn the commercial nations of the world With the awakening of that people ft mur J > et will be provided for jna7UiivtHre < l articks in uch an immense quantity that all the machinery of the world will scarce be able to supply the demand de-mand China is not alone in becon T more susceptible to the influence of chili cation The liussinu yovernment has been pushing out the 7ranvSiherian road and it is now aVmt tD leach Viadivostock the Pacific end of the line This of course has been built to a great extent as a Will measure Nevertheless the Russian government has not been backward in recognizing the benefits to he derived iron the opening of the rich ricilltuml and mineral country througn which it will pass and the construction has been conducted largely with that cud in view These things taken in connection with the ever increasing traffic between be-tween the United Stales and Japan and Australasia show how important is the commerce of the east If the people of this country will build the cable to Hawaii it is the intention in-tention of the cable company cent posed mainly of wealthy shipping men on the PacSfiw coast which is now applying ap-plying for a charter from Congress to continue the line on to Japan If the government refuses to do anything it is the intention of the Company to build the whole line In carrying out their scheme they will rely to n great extent on indemnities indem-nities from foreign governments They are in a particularly favorable condition condi-tion to expect thes on account of the present policy of the British government govern-ment England needs only a cable from Vancouver B C to New Zea r I V V V V V u < a Y r = land io enable her to have a complete electric circle around the globe touching touch-ing land only on her own territory with a great many other lines that ore extended on the territory of some other nation Ityras the intention of England Eng-land to extend a cable to New Zealand and mate a landing on Neckar Island one of the Hawaiian group but the scheme of using Neckar Island jwas frustrated by the prompt action of the provisional government of Hawaii In hoisting the flag of their country over the island V There are other reasons why the cable project would probably be successful suc-cessful if continued In the way proposed pro-posed V Japan wants to be independent independ-ent of the English wires that run to China France has a line to New Caledonia and would like to extend it There are eight cables across the Atlantic At-lantic all paying handsomely But after considering all these facts and the arguments deduced therefrom we fall to see why the United States government should lay and operate the cable to Hawaii It would be of commercial I com-mercial benefit no doubt and would be a very nice thing for the company that proposes to extend the line to Japan and with the great advantages claimed ve think that company or any other organized by private capital that chooses to embark In the enterprise enter-prise should be permitted to goahead But Uncle Sam will have an expensive Job on his hands 1C he undertakes to build and run that cable Better l tit t-It aldne |
