Show DOUGLASS RE3IA1XS Impressive Scenes Over the Body in l lngtoI Washington D C Feb 25he remaIns re-mains of Fred Douglass were conveyed early this morning to Metropolitan A M E church there to lie In state until the funeral services this afternoon after-noon At Douglass late residence brief services were conducted by Rev Hugh T Stevenson Among the floral pieces sent to the church was a beautiful design de-sign prepared at the Instance of the Haytian government While colored persons predominated in the crowds that viewed the remains there were hundreds of white people The church was crowded at the i funeral services this afternoon Rev Dr Alexander Crumveli Bishop Way I man Rev Dr Benifer Rev W T Stevenson Dr J E Rankin John I Hutchinson Susan B Anthony lIrs May Wright Sewell and Rev Anna Shaw took part In the services As the time for the services approached ap-proached the crowd in the streetin creased to such proportion that passage pas-sage wag almost impossible and early the church was well filled with those admitted by special card general admission ad-mission being denied until after the beginning of the services The body resting in plain but massive oak chest was placed in front of the altar guarded by an officer In uniform from the General Bussel Al ger Qlilltia company No 25 A simple bunch of lilacs decorated the casket I but about the altar and the pulpitswas I banked a wonderful profusion of flowers made Into appropriate designs The services were somewhat delayed and it was 215 oclock when the procession pro-cession filed into the church Among the guests of special honor gas Justice Harlan of the supreme court Senators Sherman and Hoar and number of I the members QQ the House of Representatives Repre-sentatives Tljiere was also a large delegation from the woman council The faculy oX Howard university attended at-tended Ina body SM f Af 215 the iiinerahprocesslon entered the main body of the church heated by the family of the deceased followed by the honorary pall bearers honorary pal and Immediate Im-mediate friends The singing of Nearer My God to Thee by the choir of the church was followed by prayer by the Rev Aids Crimwell D D of t Lukes Episcopal Episco-pal church In Thy Cleft of Rock of Ages was then rendered by the choir followed by the reading of the ninetieth psalm by Bishop A W Dayman D D The funeral sermon was then delivered by Rev Dr J T Jenifer of the Metropolitan Metropol-itan church Speaking of the long time pastor of Mr Douglass Dr Jenifer said Mr I Douglass was a Christian He broke with the American church and with I the American Christian dogma and I when he saw that it sanctioned and sustained the enslavement and bondage of a brother he held Christ to be above creed and above the church In this terrific soul conflict he blundered Into bewilderment but his deliverance came and he has often spoken to me of the joy of his soul in God Tributes to the memory of the dead were then paid by Rev T H Stevenson Steven-son of the Anacosta Baptist church I and Dr J E Rankin president of I Howard university Mr John Hutchinson of Boston a I old friend of 7 > Ir Douglass sang a hymn by the special request of Mrs Douglass and was followed by Clement Haentjens minister to this country from Hayti Remarks followed by Mrs Susan B Anthony who also read letter a leter from Elizabeth Cady Stanton Remarks were also offered by Rev W D Derrick of New York A touching Incident of the service was the tribute paid to Mr Douglass by John Hutchinson of Boston who himself an extremely aged man with gnow white beard and long white locks reaching down on his shoulders is said to be the last of the wel known Hutchinson Hut-chinson family with whom Douglass was associated in antislavery days The old man had come all the way from Boston to be present at the funeral and sing an old absolution song with which by Douglass side lie had inspired many an audience in New England and abroad against the evil of slavery He made s few reminIscent remi-niscent remarks and then sang the gong at the conclusion of which there were few dry eyes in the audience The benediction was pronounced by Bishop Williams of th colored CMetho dist church in South Carolina Instead of diminishing the crowd which gathered around the front of the church and In the street had increased in-creased during the services so it was almost impossible for the funeral procession pro-cession to make its way to the carriages car-riages outside The services were extremely long and it was after 5 oclock when they were concluded The body was escorted to the depot by the colored letter carriers car-riers of the district as well as by a large number of friends of the deceased and his family The remains were put aboard the 710 train for Rochester |
