Show I HBER ENON EXPLAINS Tells Why He Voted For George Q Con Representative Heber Bennion said yesterday that he felt he owed a word of explanation for the position he took atthecose of the balloting for United States senator in voting for George Q Cannon uIy only reason for sO doing he said was that a senator might be I elected I felt that Mr McCune had reached the limit of his strength and that his election was impossible The minority Democrats had declared themselves them-selves one and all so absolutely against 11 l1cCune that T saw lie would need Republican votes to win out and I knew that the minute any Republican began voting for him he would lose several of his Democratic supporters And there was the situation We were but one day away from adjournment and no nearer an election than a month agO So I decided in order that Utah might not go for two years with but one senator Jn congress to propose the name of George Q Cannon for I thought hc was the only man who could by any possibility win out where others had so signally failed J at any time Mr fcCune or any other Democrat Demo-crat had shown strength enough so that there was a possibility of an elec ton I should have gone over to him to help him out and so also I believe would l Cummings and 11 Redd have done I have felt that In justice to myself and my Democracy I ought course to make this explanation of my |
