Show iai ATrlE WITH OUTlAWS OVER 100 EUNDRED SHOTS FIRED DURING THE rIELEE AD Indian the Only Man Injured Sheriff Tyler of Grand County With Posse Pursues Bandits SpecIal Correspondence Motb March 9Sherlff Tyler of Grand county and a posse consisting of Deputy Sheriff Tangreen J C WH cox R W Westwood Herbert Day and Red Wilson have just returned from a twelve days search In the Robbers Roost country southeast of here on the west side ot the Green rIver and report some exciting events on the trIp They started out on Feb 25 on the trail ot some horses that members ot the gang had stolen during one ot their periodical raids IntO this valley The trail was lost on the sandstone reef and the party went across to settlements settle-ments on the west side hoping to get someone 10 show them the trails That section is almost impenetrable to those ignorant ot the trails They failed to get wd and they rode through to the Henry mountain country hoping to get some information of the horses on that sIde On their return on Monday March 6 they dlseoyered a fresh trail leading into the country they wanted to reach and followed it up riding careful for surprises When they thought they were close In they waited till nIght and then closed In and discovered dis-covered the light of a camp fire but so situated they could not approach it without beIng discovered It being in aside a-side canyon and under a shelving rock I They watched tIll mornIng and about sunrise one of the gang a halfbreed i fo ag f Indian came out and was ordered to throw up his hands but Instead opened fire and a battle commenced The Indian In-dian dropped and was last seen crawl bog behind the rocks and it was thought lIe was badly hurt Three others of the gang in the party opened fire and it was kept up for nearly two Ion I g sh tsn hours Over a hundred shots were fired on both sides but as far as known no one was hurt but the IndIan The I fire of the gang from behind the rocks stopped and the sheriffs party being nearlY out of ammunition withdrew I takIng two horses that were found i there that had been stolen from Moab oi All that was gained by the officers was knowledge of the country that will be I of aid in case of future moves in that direction The difficulty of reaching the headquarters head-quarters of the gang makes their oper aliens on surrounding settlements com I paratlel easy for with a few hours start they can ride to where if expecting expect-ing officers they can stand off a large force for a long time It is a favorite section for criminals from western and southwestern Colorado Utah New Mexico and Arizona TIlls is the first I attempt by officers tOo penetrate that section I |
