Show I CUBAN DAMAGE CLAIMS Tent lon Must Be Paid By Our Government Washington March nThe depa mOnt of State has received claims to the pQut of 2100000 on account of property destroyed In Cuba belonging to America citizens and also on ac c01nt of Injures sustained by citizens for which pecuniary indemnity is sought The peace treaty expressly provided that the United State and Spain eaqh had assume the liabilities for all such claims preferred by their respective citizens Therefore the United State government is probably chargeable for alt the damages sustained sus-tained by Americans throughout Cuba by either thE Insurgent or Spanish troop and in the case of lome plantations i planta-tions owned by American citizens thee losses Were very heavy I Congress made no provision for the settlement of thee claims so the state department is at present unable to do I more than merelY to file them I is the purpose of the department when congress meet again to cal attention to the treaty obligations assumed by the United States towards these claimants claim-ants and to suggest that some means of settlement be provided either through a commission or by reference I I to theu court or claims |
