I AUXILIARY WARSHIPRAMMED Yacht Syren Run Down By a British Tramp Steamer Norfolk Va Sept 6The first serious seri-ous accident to any vessel of the auxiliary auxil-iary navy occurred at Hampton Roads when the converted yacht Syren was rammed by a British tramp steamer I The little vessel which closely resembled resem-bled the Gloucester was just sWinging to her anchorage point in the leeof the Dolphin and as she came broadside across the channel the big steamship Topaz coming opt from Norfolk directly di-rectly in the Syrens wake struck her with terrific force bows on The Syren was thrown almost on her beam ends The steamship promptly backed mt and continued on her I course out the capes at full speed wIthout i with-out stopping to ascertain the damage she had done or to render assistance The captatn will be proceeded against at the next ort he puts into The Syre at once signaled the flagship flag-ship Rammed filling rapidly I Beach yourself wab wigwagged from the San Francisco 1n reply and the I Syren promptly madp for shore at full i speed She glided upon th sand without with-out injury and was immediately surrounded sur-rounded by launches and boats ordered or-dered to her assistance by the flagship Fore and aft anchors wee rigged to hold her and an examination of her injuries in-juries revealed a great jagged hole amidships below the waterline It will be temporarily repaired until the yes I gel can be docked at the navy yard Jadly Her upper works were also stove in I
