| Show APPEAL TO MKINLEY Massachusetts Asks Rim to Protect Her Volunteers Boston Mass Sept GGovernor Wolcott whose mail is burdened with anxious inquiries as to the condition of the Sixth Massachusetts volunteers now in Porto RIco has sent the following fol-lowing telegram to President McKinley McKin-ley The pitiable condition in which the Second and Fifth Massachusetts regiments regi-ments have been returned from their arduous and gallant service in Cuba has naturally caused a profound sense of solicitude regarding the Sixth regiment regi-ment now in Porto Rico Uy own feelings are deeply concerned and I am besought by personal letters and by the authorities of cities to ask for the return promptly and the mustering out of this regiment I have felt it my duty to decline to comply with this reQuest re-Quest so loqg as the national government govern-ment requires their services The splendid patriotism whIch prompted their voluntary enlistment wlll sustain them in any peril or hardship they maybe may-be called on to endure But the lives of persons are precious in the eyes of the commonwealth as I am well assured they are to you to whom the fortunEs of our army have been competently entrusted and I have the hOIJOr urgently ur-gently to request that whether in camp in garrison or on transports these lies maY be tenderly guarded bj every precaution pre-caution in clothing food and medical attention which science may suggest To this end no effort can be too great and no expenditure too lavish The commonwealth through its constituted authorities and through the contributions contribu-tions of its patriotic citizens will ba assisted by the Volunteer Ad association associa-tion who will consIder it a privilege to be permitted with money or supplies to aid the efforts which the national government is making to render us service ser-vice less perilous to the lives and health of its gallant soldiers |
