Show PARTY BELIEFS The Pittsburgh Dispatch says The beliefs of the majority are the beliefs of the party and those of the minority who cannot accept those principles should leave the party and join that with which they are in sympathy sym-pathy For this reason the Democrats of Ohio Indiana and Illinois are to be applauded for making no concessions to a foreign sentiment The party lines must be redrawn upon the great public issues so the voters will be in sympathy with their leaders If this were not the case there could be no party beliefs It is perfectly competent for a party which means a majority of the party to adopt new doctrines or modify old ones The founders of a party have no greater authority than those who come alfter them though this is a fact that is very oftei overlooked The gold men in the Democratic party talk about the silver men betraying the party Such talk is mere nonsense If the siLver men are n control at Chicago and they certainly will be they will I have as much right to pledge the party to a policy of free silver as the majority ma-jority at St Louis had to pledge the Republican party 10 the gold standard and against free silver parties were Immobile things and could not meet issues as they arose they would very soon fall into disuse and decay One of the chief if not the chlefest purposes pur-poses ct national conventions is to declare the policy of the parties upon national issues Four years ago there was no great issue over the question of free silver this year there Is Because Be-cause there was no issue of this kind four years ago is that u reason why the Democratic party should not define its position upon it this year Majorities must rule Jn parties as r o < f 01 j they rule in politics in this country If minorities do not like that arrarrje ment they must quit the parties bolt as it is commonly called but when they do bolt they ceas to belong to the party from which they have bolted And this applies to all parties without exception |
