Show ALLEGED FILIBUSTERERS Reasons Git en Why They Were Taken In KEY WEST Fla June 2iThe steamer City of Richmond which left here Wednesday morning arrived at Miami Thursday noon and landed a cargo of fruit cigars etc She left Miama Friday morning at S oclock and before she got over the bar one of the revenue cutter WInonas small boats in charge of Lieutenant Hay and four marines boarded the steamer and examined her papers They were found to be all right Hay then went l back to the cutter and the captain ordered J or-dered him to return and examine some cases of hardware which were marked Diamond Jacksonville I The officers of the steamer were questioned ques-tioned as to why the cases were not anded at Miami and they stated that J there was no one there to receive them and pay the charges The officers of the steamer ama informd the lieutnant i that passengers were not landed there because they had j PURCHASED ROUND TRIP TICKETS j TICK-ETS I l and than they only went for the trip Upon examining the cases they were found to contain arms and ammunition p ammuni-tion Lieutenant Hay having been instructed i in-structed if he found arms on board to l take charge of the vessel ordered it to 1 proceed to Key West and she left for here at 1 oclock Friday afternoon j I The steamer Three Friends was I met outside the Indian Key and was j signalled by Lieutenant Hay who requested the officers to send a boat alongside This was done Hay I boarded the Three Friends and examined ex-amined the pap Ts which wer > found to be all right He reported to the revenue cutter and its captain ordered 1 1 J I the first lieutenant to take charge of the boat Captain Bowers had onboard I on-board Senor Castaila Senor Santa and Carlos Silva as guests for a two weeks I cruise among the Keys The Three Friends took coal and water this morning and It is reported she will be released and leave tomorrow THE CITY OF RICHMOND came up to the dock this morning and was boarded by a deputy United States marshal who arrested her captain and assengers They were taken before the United States commissioner and charged with engaging in a military j expedition against Spain The defendants defen-dants entered a plea of not guilty Deputy Collector P T Knight asked for a continuance of the case until the arrival of the district attorney and the case was postponed until Wednesday Wednes-day The prisoners were released on bail of 50 each The 276 cases of arms were landed at Kiiibricks dock and are now in charge of the customs officials I The City of Richmond was libeled today to-day by John T Sawyer one of the largest stockholders who presented a claim of 1053 for stores furnished I |
