Show o SECRET OF OVER A CENTURY REVEALED The terrible rains of a week ago says I the St Louis Republic of Dec 13 caused landslide on Flat Top mountain near I Pikevillc Ky bringing to light the last resting place of the longlost Flnlay and party These people came to Kentucky with Daniel Boone In 1769 They disappeared disap-peared from camp In the wilderness and never after were heard of again The mountain on which the landslide occurred oc-curred is situated on Big Mud creek In Floyd county and th mystery of a century cen-tury was discovered by Charles Akers a boy of IS who went out squirrel hunting a day or two after the ravaging rains On ascending the hill he saw that there had been a landslide recently and started start-ed up the mountain to discover its origin Onethird of the way up he came to a large cave the entrance of which was 12 feet in diameter Young Akers who is a daring fellow gathered pine knots made a torchlight of them and began to explore the newlydiscovered cave For a hundred yards ut least he walked through the cavern until he reached a second entrance Following this for a distance of 100 feet he came to a large I I room 5 feet square and scattered about I he beheld the skeletons of human beings I and horses Badly frightened the young man beat a hasty retreat and told his people at home what he had found No one at first would believe i but several of his acquaintances giving credit to his story went to see for themselves Young Akers nlloted them to the cave and armed w th torchlights the party explored I ex-plored the mystic shrine of death and destruction I de-struction As the boy had told them I they found five human skeletons and the bones of six horses Three of the skeletons skel-etons indicate that they must have belonged be-longed to men over six feet tall Closer examination seemed to indicate that they succumbed while engaged In a desperate battle Two skulls were split open as though it had been done I wih an ax or a tomahawk The back and two ribs of another were broken and the head of another an-other was entirely gone The remainder showed marks r bullets through their I 1 skulls one in the right temple and the I I 1 other in the forehead Nearly one quart I I of battered bullets was found near the batered I wall of the room besides numerous Indian i In-dian arrowheads The skeletons of the I horses lay in a semicircle indicating that they had been killed first and then used as breastworks Each of the horses had I a bullethole in the right temple The general supposition Is that the skeletons skel-etons are the remains of the lost Finlay I I party who wandered off from the Boone camp on the Licking river In 17C9 that I they were lost and in their wanderings I I came across this cave where they were attacked by Indians and killed i I A former landslide covered up the mouth of the cave Some of the r settlers I set-tlers say their fathers and grandfathers I I used to tell them of this cave before its entrance was barred with sand and rocks I and It was believed to be haunted I The mountain is not very steep but Is over 1000 feet high Owing to tho recent re-cent heavy rains the loose dirt became soaked with water and nearly tho whole I mountain side slipped from its foundation over its downward 100 yards course uprooting everything In |
