Show A POLITICAL PREACHER When a preacher gets a taste of politics he soon develops an abnormal appetite for it Rev Thomas Dixon jr of New York is a remarkable example of this During the late campaign he was very badly troubled with silverphobia It will be remembered that he was compelled com-pelled to have policemen in his church to quell disturbances so terribly militant had he become Now he is suffering from the jim jams over the Cuban question The name of Mr Olney is to him much the same as a I ed rag to a bull He denounced him i in his sermon last Sunday saying that I his position in regard to the Cameron I resolution is a blow at American I liberty and that if his interpretation of the powers of the president is a proper one the statue of liberty should be taken down and replaced with one of Alphonso III Our own idea is that if the statue of liberty is to be replaced by that of another it should be by one of Rev Dr Thomas Dixon jr the First Mr Olney said this militant minister knows his position is untenable and illegal The president is the servant of the people but is master of the army and navy and these are also the servants of the people He also said that the position taken by Mr Olney was a disgrace to the country and that our navy was controlled by Spain Whether the position taken by Mr Olney be right or wrong the position taken by Rev Dr Dixon as a minister of the gospel is decidedly wrong His talk plainly shows that he is actuated not by the spirit of Christianity but by that of jingoism He pursues a sacred calling but his intemperate talk on political matters shows that he is wholly unfit for it that instead of it elevating him he degrades it He is I striving for notoriety and not for salvation sal-vation he is seeking not the way of eternal life but the way of popularity His hatred of Spanish outrage may be great and his sympathy for Cuba genuine but his egotism and self love are far greater Two months ago this same man was howling about the silver men in the same ursine tone of voice He neither advances the cause of religion and humanity nor elevates politics His true position is with some barnstorming barn-storming company of actors |
