Show I OUTPUT OF THE METALS Increase In Gold Produ Decrease De-crease In Silver I New York Jan IThe Engineering and Mining Journal tomorrow will say The production of minerals and metals I in the United States for the year 1896 I is given at a total value of 653311463 showing a decrease as compared with I 1895 of 24689266 or about 3 11 per cent This decrease was largely in values I rather than in quantities and in no chief articles was there any marked decrease while in several there were considerable increases The total production of metals in the year 1896 was valued at 242311481 an increase of 1694111 over the previous i year while the value of nonmetaling substances was 410999987 a decrease I of 263S3377 from 1895 A large part of this was due to the lower value of coal stone and a few other important substances very little resulting from the smaller quantities The increase in coP Del has been extraordinary ex-traordinary the total amounting to 76 370150 pounds The production of gold reached the great total of 57000000 a gain of 10 169800 This is an extraordinary advance ad-vance which far surpasses the gain reported from any other country in the world and puts the United States far in the lead of gold producing countries Our output in gold was no less than 26 per cent of the total reported for the entire world The production of pig iron has been 8768869 long tons The decrease from 1895 being only 677439 tons or about 7 r > er cent The production of lead from domestic domes-tic ores amounted to 175777 short tons showing an increase of 20863 tons over the preceding year In addition to this there were 79000 tons produced from imported ores or refined from imported bullion The outmit of qilcksilver was 33012 flasks of 6y pounds each shu ing a decrease of 966 flarkn I from the previous I year j J The production continues to come wholly from the California mines The production of silver from domestic domes-tic ores reached a total of 45465173 fine ounces showing a decrease of 865 OG2 ounces There were produced or refined from foreign ores and bullion by our smelters and other works nol no-l ss than 40000000 fine ounces of silver making the total quantity refined making refned or put into final marketable form in this country 85465173 fine ounces The total production of spelter or commercial zinc for 1SJ6 amounted to 77044 short tons showing a decrease of 4774 tons from that of 1895 I The output of bituminous coal was 141770099 tons showing a gain of 4 371752 tons On the other hand there was a decrease of 6782057 short tons I in the anthracite production The total coal production was therefore there-fore 193351073 short tons or the total I decrease as compared with 1895 was 2410305 tons i I |
