Show FIRE IN IE A OARmNG HOUSf THREE PERSONS CREMATED AT SPSINGFIELD ILL Proprietcr Lost His Life In an Attempt At-tempt to Save an Aged GuestHouse Guest-House Quickly Destroyed Springfield T s Feb 4In boarding board-ing house fire eaily this morning three persons were burned to death The dead are Mrs Eva Withey proprietor of the boardinghouse Miss Hden Rose and J C Hall The boarding house stood at the northeast corner of Seventh and Cook streets a large twostory brick structure struc-ture Shortly before 6 oclock a servant found the reception room fult of smoke and in a moment liames burst through the walls She immediately gave an alarm There were eighteen boarders nearly all of whom were asleep Mrs Withey who conducted the boarding house hurried through the house awakening the boarders The flames spread so swiftly that within a few minutes they seemed to fill the whole house The guests hurried from their rooms mostly in their night robes Mrs Withey after getting her four children out went back into tha house to assist Mr J C Hall an old man who occupied a room on the second sec-ond floor She groped her way through the smoke up the stairway She was never seen afterwards until her charred char-red body was removed a few hours later from the ruins A daughter of Mr Hall also started up the stairway lighting a match as she went but was deterred from going by other boarders who thus saved her life Mrs Withey had been state president I ol the Daughters of Rebecca Miss Helen Rose was a sister of Mrs John McCreery wife of the proprietor of the St Nicholas Hotel J C Hall was a retired grocer and was 80 years old The origin of the fire is supposed to have been a defective Hue The interior in-terior of the house was totally destroyed de-stroyed leaving only I the brick wall Standing The loss is probably 10000 partially covered by insurance H |
