our great object with Democratic votes What folly Where do you ex uect to get them Sly friends our success suc-cess depends on whether we all stand together to-gether Populist Republican and Democrat Demo-crat We are not to stand on the name of Democracy We do not exist merely for the purpose of electing Democrats to office of-fice such a party is not worthy of life We exist now our object nowIs to bring to the people of this country bimetallism That is its sole mission l now this worthy exponent of bimet alltsm be defeated In this assembly there will remain not a single man of these few those r few who assisted with voice and pen and influence to accomplish the mission of the Democratic party There is not a single man before this assembly or who can be brought before this assembly sembly who bimetallism sebly can carry the banner of metallism as he There is no man here in Utah who has sacrificed more nay a much In ISCO you will find that there is no man within the boundaries of Utah no not within these United States whp can so forth with more logic and power and draw more votes to that ticket You know that you know i well Go to your constituency go to your children at home so to the miners in the depths of the earth go to Washington to the national na-tional leaders of Democracy to the national na-tional leaders of Repub leant mad hero ask Vho In Utah h done more for bimetallism bi-metallism who has sacrificed most who can and will do most The answer will come from each and all Frank J Cannon Can-non Range over the whole United States and upon asking who stands most I 1 prominently for bimetallism the same name will be given i This assembly is as it were standing I I like an ant on a molehill and declaring that you see the whole world The thing to do my friends is to rise to superior heights Look at the contest superor I tional standpoint Rise above our pre I I judices come above the I i judice cme plane of Individuals Indi-viduals That Is what we should do as I 1 patriots alone would do My friends it I i I demands our patriotism upon i depends the happiness of ourselves our children and our childrens children I now ask you from the very depths of my heart to throw aside partisanism declare to the world that bimetallism is the great ques tion of the world and vote with us for world Frank J Cannon wih TWO REPUBLICANS CONVERTED In an eloquent effort Representative Law announced his conversion to Senator Sen-ator Cannons cause and later in the day Representative Taylor Rep I joined the silver Republican from Cache in voting for the retiring senator I sena-tor Representative Laws speech was I a follows Mr President after listening to theo the-o plea of Representative Johnson ll of Weber in behalf of the united bimetallic bime-tallic force I arise to say that I for one iree ir recognize the force tgf sr argument and f the justice of the policy and principle ad vocatodby him And sir in line with that argument and my own conscience I am going to change my vote I suppose I will be likely to earn the reputation of being fickle in my choice fd of candidate for the fi 1en senate sen-ate but up until the present time 1 have tried to maintain a consistent course and upon that point con clenee is clear and to some extent I feel that exquisite pleasure which a man alwas experiences through the consciousness of having done his duty and done it well As to the I future I intend to be actuated only by those same pure and honest motives A reason for my present change is Mr Prebident that I am one of those who believe that no permanent prosperity will 1 > e enioyed by the people of the United States until we restore the free coinage of silver a the old ration of 16 to 1 What is more sir I believe that our commercial greatness as a nation our financial in deptrdt nee and the freedom of American farmers and workmen from the shackles rivctfd upon them by a unscrupulous money power through the contraction of our national currenrv depends to a lao degree upon the triumnh of the great cat s Mr President I am as firmly grounded upon this conviction a the rocks of agt ad I cannot help but respond to the call of duty and in this ca > e duty tells me that I should come to the rescue of thl man who has sacrificed his all upon the altar of financial independence 1 take i ladies and gentlemei iat It j = just ta nuch of an obligation de iolng upon American citizens to defend de-fend our constitutional right and the cam of the people as it is to defend our national honor and sir the man or woman who does either at the host of per onal sacrifice is or should be re gaitkd as a hero and a such b entitled I to he united support of every believer in the jislice of the principles he has done to much to vindicate I i a sir in line with this sentiment that I a going tn change my vote I am going to vote ir Iriiiit j Cannon I a going to vot for him on account of my firm conviction con-viction in his superior fitness and b I caust I believe his reelection will be a vindication of a principle which I have lone euntencf d for My friends by electing elect-ing him it will sene a notice upon the goldbugs of the est that Utah is lo > alto I al-to the silver cause apd delights In doing honor to Its noble champion I believe In so doing I will in time receive re-ceive the full ard free commendation of my entire constituency because sir I was elected only after pledging myself a vote for no man for United States senator sen-ator who did not champion the cause of silver during the midnight hours of 1SD6 There is one thing I want to impress upon this assembly that in casting my vote as I will at this time i I do so to foster the cause of united and independent bimetallism bimetal-lism I do so because I believe I owe my allegiance to the principles which I believe are for the material advancement o the great commonwealth or which we turm a part I take i sir that this duty is above par prejudice and personal gain I ay here that next to the duty 1 owe toGo to-Go a my creator and spiritual director cornea the duty I owe to my country Const ejupntlj because I believe the future I I i greutrf and the happiness of our population I I popu-lation depends upon the success of the I I cane of remonetlzation of silver I cast my vote for Senator Frank J Cannon FARR LEAVES KING On the seventysecond ballot Representative sentative Farr who had been supporting support-ing King since the fiftyfifth ballot on Jan Jb withdrew and went back to McCune swelling his vote to 28 After the result of this ballot was announced Senator Bennion moved that when the assembly dissolved i I be until Monday noon Senator Smoot proposed an amendment making the hour 330 yesterday afternoon The I amendment prevailed by a vote of 3 to 21 Almost without exception the King Cannon and Powers forces voted I in opposition to the amendment while the Republicans and the ilcCune men I favored It eiore the original motion a amended amend-ed was put Representative N J Harris Har-ris proposed that dissolution be until 3 p m and by a overwhelming vote the earlier hour was agreed to TWELVE CONSECUTIVE BALLOTS On reconvening at 3 p m the joint assembly proceeded with the seventy I thir ballot Senator Martha H Cannon Can-non was absent and did not respond to the roll call until the seventysixth ballot vas called some minutes later The only notable change at the beginning be-ginning of the afternoon session was when Representative Taylor on the I seventythird ballot without a word of omment or explanation withdrew rom the Republican column and an lounced himself for Frank J Cannon His change of vote was In pursuance it a notre of intention given In the Republican caucus during the recess Representative Taylor did not remain throughout the caucus but State Chairman Walton took his place and Purged the remaining ones of the minority mi-nority t continue voting for Sutherland There was no change in the seventy fourth nor the seventyfifth ballots At the end of the seventy ffth Representative Rep-resentative Fisher proposed that when the assembly dissolved It be until Monday at 1150 a m The motion was carried without opposition and then Representative Cook moved dissolution but the motion was lost20 ayes to 38 I noes The seventysixth ballot gave the same result a the first one taen on reassembling the only difference being in Mrs Cannons response to the roll call for the first time during the afternoon after-noon The ballot gave McCune 28 King l Powers 2 Cannon S Sutherland I erland 1 The seventyseventh ballot was the same and so also was the seventy i eighth Between these two ballots Representative Wheeler moved for Representtve a dissolution but 42 opposed and only 18 favored the motion 1 During the progress of the seventy ninth ballot Representative Betts said I understand that this prolonged balloting Is for the purpose that our friends will get assistance from the Republican side of the house I that is the real fact of the case I hope the gentlemen contemplating to win such a feat a that will do i and ease their minds I cast my vote again for W H King t > of l Han by way reply Representative Ha sea said Representative Betts has just stated that the prolonged balloting this afternoon in his opinion is for the alleged purpose of the majority side the Republican vote The securing Republcn gentleman gen-tleman is entirely mistaken The fact i I is that we are simply trying to win over such Democratic members with i mild dispositions a Mr Betts A moment later Representative Wheeler said I the McCuneites expect ex-pect to from Kings pet get any support Kings solid 13 they are badly mistaken While the next ballot was in progress Representative to Farr took opportunity say I have just been informed that the assembly is continuing balloting expecting ex-pecting me to change my vote My friend Cook here is waiting for me togo I j to-go over to O W Powers I wish to I I say that I shall not change my vote again today I I I wish to state in reply to Mr Farr saW Representative Lapish that the entire Powers push voted for adjournment i adjourn-ment a few mcwrents ago I vote for I O W Powers again I I WELCH INDULGES IN IRONY On the eightysecond ballot Representative I Represen-tative Welch arose to say I This question is certaiily assuming a serious aspect I has been stated here I that this continued balloting was in the hope that the Republican members I would help settle the senatorial ques tion I would say sr that up to the present we much prefer to have the majority settle this question We have been asked by the gentlemen not to interfere in-terfere and will comply with this request re-quest We certainly cannot afford at I present to allow this to continue because be-cause I imagine that two years hence when the ballots are presented to the people it will be written underneath the rooster instead of let it go at that words like this Thou art weighed the balance and found wanting I cast my vote again for George Sutherland I Suther-land At the conclusion o Mr Welchs remarks I re-marks Senator Peery proposed a dissolution dis-solution but the motion was voted down I TO vary the monotony of the next I ballot the eightythird Representative Betts said as he voted again for Judge King that he wished to t < l his Republican I Re-publican friends that in two years from now the Democratic rooster will still be crowing I Then Senator Shurtliff moved for a i dissolution but the noes overwhelmed the ayes The next ballot the eightyfourth I and last of the day developed no change I resulted just like the sev entysixth and intervening ones i This time the motion for cessation of balloting and adjournment of the joint assembly till Monday noon came from the right side Senator Evans the Mc Cune leader made the motion I prevailed pre-vailed by a vote of 42 ayes to 18 note |
