i New York March SA special cable dispatch to the Sun from Havana says Another bold attack has been made mae by the insurgents on a town near Havana Ha-vana Arroyo Apolo which is near I El Cerro one of the fashionable suburbs sub-urbs of the capital has been attacked by the insurgents commanded by Romero I Ro-mero and Aransruren I In the first engagement there the Spaniards lost 26 soldiers When the Spaniards received reinforcements from I the capital the Cubans retired without with-out accomplishing their purpose which was to obtain the provisions and ammunitIons I am-munitIons stored in Arroyo Apolo A few hours later the insurgents returned re-turned in larger numbers and Ithough the Spanish garrison had doubled by drawing on the Havana suburbs of Platino and Cienega the patriots ransacked ran-sacked the stores and obliged the the Spaniards to abandon the place I The end of the engagement was a I handtohand fight in which the Cubans Cu-bans charged with machetes making havoc in the Spanish lines The fight from the first attack to the final defeat of the garrison lasted 14 hours and in all that time the Spanish authorities did not send any heavy column from the forts or battalions of volunteers which might easily have defeated the insurgents as the latter did not number more than 1000 men I is not believed here that Aran guren with his scanty forces and entire en-tire lack of artillery would attempt to take Havana but at the same time his dash and bravery are much feared by the Spanish and nobody doubts that if strong Cuban forces from Matanzas and Las Villas should join him he j i would risk an attack even on the capital j cap-ital itself I i As i is now Aranguren ha checked j i the Spanish columns marching out of Havana and has put the city in a I state of siege from the landside The j I provisions from the country on account ac-count of his constant raids are very irregularly supplied Some times meat is so scarce that there is not enough for the restaurants On some days neither milk nor vegetable can be ob j I tamed at any price I 1 I General Weyler l is confiding in the j I strength of the forts which protect the capital and also upon the scanty resources re-sources ofAranguren I At Manacas province of Santa Clara the Spanish forces of the Plzzaro battalion bat-talion were defeated by the insurgent I leader Alberto Rodriguez In the thick of the engagement many Spanish soldiers j sol-diers deserted and passed over to the j insurgents This news has made General I j Gen-eral Weyler angry and hy his orders several officers of the Pizzaro battalion j I have been arrested and will soon be courtmartialed for cowardice I Such cases as these are not infrequent infre-quent The Spanish soldier is tired of i the illtreatment he suffers owing to I the immorality of the officers who j spend and gamble away the money entrusted en-trusted to them for provisioning the j troops I Excitement at Pensacola Mobile Ala March SA special to i i the Register from Pensacola Fla S says > The filibuster excitement was revived re-vived here this morning when the i cruiser Marblehead suddenly steamed into the harbor and came to anchor near the Montgomery One of the officers of-ficers came ashore and it was learned that she had come from the vicinity of Appalachicola to have her bunkers I filled with coal I was learned that she had left a armed launch and crew I at Appalachicola to keep watch until her 1 turn I is an open secret that the cars of arms and boats that left Jacksonville on Thursday arrived here The cars were open and the contents could be easily seen The body of j I Cubans went to Appalachicola and it I I is known that a customs officer has j I gone from here to that port The fact that the arms and surf boats were shipped here in open cars and that the I Cubans went in broad daylight to Ap palachicola leads the public to conclude con-clude that the whole movement was only a grand stand play to divert I the attention of the officials from some point on the coast where operations opera-tions are being carried on I In addition to the war vessels several men supposed to be PJnkerton detec I tives are here and every person who I t is suspected of being in any way connected con-nected with the movement is being constantly shadowed I I Work of the Butcher New York March SA special t the World from Havana via Jacksonville Fl says General Weyler has issued I an order di recting that hereafter all women arrested in Cuba who are called susnicous shall be tried by court martial While the penalty Is not publicly stated Vhie supposed that if the women are found guilty the death penalty will be Imposed The issuing of this order has been pro tested against by some of the foreign consuls I con-suls General Weyler says i is asserted that the women are hardest to subdue t > nd tnd that If he had his way he would kill them first and try them afterwards ki A kinsmanof the first president of the skeleton by inhuman treatment and is now dying from the effects He is only 16 years of age Protection For Americans New York March 9A Sun special from Washington says There will be no reduction of the strength of the Nctth Atlantic station as long as the Cuban question remains prominent This policy has been determined upon already by the administration and is believed to be because of the large number of Americans now under arrest ar-rest in Cuba and the intention of the administration to afford them full protection pro-tection I the fate of Dr Ruiz befalls another American citizen it is believed that Secretary Sherman will call at once for a fleet of warships for immediate imme-diate service at Havana to supportS support-S S 0 whatever claims may be made by the consul general The Dresence of a warship there would be in accordance with the suggestion of General Lee to 11 Olney last month and there are strong indications that Mr Sherman in any event will ask that at least one naval vessel be stationed in Cuban waters There is no question that if an American citizen is dealt harshly with by the Spaniards a war vessel will soon be on its way to Havana Today Secretary Sherman spent over an hour with the president in a discussion dis-cussion of the Cuban question and particularly the caseof two Americans now under arrest one of whom has sent an urgent appeal here for immediate imme-diate aid reporting that he is liable at any time to meet the fate that befell be-fell Ruiz Secretary Sherman it was stated this afternoon will communicate with General Gen-eral Lee and urge him to present to J the Spanish officials the firm protest of this government against ill treatment I of Americans on the island whether I their nativity questioned or not |
