Show HISTORY WILL T REPEAT JSELF Old Glory Will Float From the Mountain Called Ensign ¬ En-sign Peak 1 A PROPOSITION FROM THE HbRALD Has Organized an Ensign Peak I Flag Association Staff at Least Seventyfive Feet to Be Erected on the Historic Mount From Which Old Glory Will Float During the Coming Pioneer Jubilee Celebration and on Every National and State Celebration Cel-ebration ThereafterIn Order That All May Feel an Interest Contributions Will 3e Received Fifty years ago on the coming 24th of July the pioneers of Utah I entered this valley Among their first actions according accord-ing to history was the unfurling of the American flag on what was then Spanish soil Next Old Glory was carried to the highest mountain to the north of the valley and there its folds fluttered in the wind I was a fitting and patriotic finale to the dangers troubles and privations through which the pioneers pio-neers had passed THE HERALDS PROPOSITION The Herald proposes that history shall repeat itself on the coming Twentyfourth of July and will I cause to be erected on the historic mount a flagstaff not less than 75 feet in height I will in all probability I prob-ability be made of iron which for many reasons is preferable to wood for such a purpose and at such an altitude The flag to be attached to it will be of the best quality of double bunting or silk and of sufficient size to be easily discernable from at least the central portion of the cityThe The present plans which are not yet thoroughly matured will be to have the staff in place by at least the 20th of July WHEN THE SUN RISES Then on the morning of the 24th Pioneers Dayjust as 4he sun throws his beams over the Wa satch range or ust at daybreak should i be deemed best Old Glory will be run to the masthead thereto there-to remain until the celebration is over Or every succeeding national or state noliday the Stars and Stripes will be displayed from the peak at an early hour in the morning FOR THE PUBLIC t The Herald is perfectly willing to assume the entire expense of this undertaking as a portion of its eftorts to make the coming celebration celebra-tion the success it should be and that was its original intention but whenever and wherever the idea has been mooted the men and women spoken to have invariably responded I have a dollar to help that along So that in order that all citizens not only of Salt Lake but also of the entire state may feel that they ca if they so desire have an interest J in-terest in the flag and in the ceremonies cere-monies incidental to its raising not only on the coming Pioneer Jubilee day hut for all time thereafter and in order that they may have a right to look upon even the bare staff a I springs from the summit of Ensign En-sign as something in which they have an interes The Herald has decided to open a department to be known as The Heralds Ensign Peak FLag Association and will acknowledge publicly from time to time the receipts from such as care to become contributors to it CONTRIBUTIONS I No limit will be placed in contributions I contribu-tions save that no single contribution contri-bution can be less thnn 5 cents The actual cost of the flag and I I the staff the planting of the latter lat-ter and the unfurling of the former for-mer has not yet been ascertained but a detailed statement of the receipts re-ceipts and expenditures will be made on the 25th of July or thereabouts there-abouts and should the receipts exceed ex-ceed the expenditures a proper disposal dis-posal of the balance will be made and announced I There are many details yet to be I considered in connection with the raising of Old Glory on that historic his-toric mount on that historic day one however is to tender to all i the state city and county officials i i an invitation to be present on the brow the hill at the foot of Ensign r v < En-sign Peak and directly overlooking i overlook-ing the Capital grounds where fitting f 1 fit-ting ceremonies could be held prior to the flag being flung to the breeze at the same time a proper salute I being fired by the battery of National Na-tional Guard of Utah DETAILS TO COMEt COME-t Further details will be given from lS time to time a they may be developed It de-veloped In the meantime plans will be prepared for the staff and flag and all who desire to become i members of The Herald EnsignS Ensign-S Peak Flair Association may send t In whatever amount they choose r I to that address care this officer office-r THE HERALD COB CO-B A MDANTEL Manager SSf |
