Show THE GOSPEL OF JESUS VIEWED mOM TH STAND POINT OF A MORMON Lecture at the Assembly Hall Last Evening by Elder Charles W Penrose Under the Auspices of the M I A Elder Charles W Penrose in a I lengthy and eloquent lecture last night explained to a large audience at the Assembly hal the Gospel of Jesus Christ From a Mormon Standpoint He began with a detailed sketch of the Mormon doctrine as it was transmitted trans-mitted from a divine source to the Prophet Joseph Smith The gospel asset as-set forth in the Book of Mormon was also given exploitation Whether or not said Elder Penrose the true gospel was to be found in Mormonism there could only be one gospel which had upon i the divine sanction No two divergent systems could be divinely true The doctrines upon which the structure struc-ture of Mormonism rested were faith repentance baptism and the gift by the laying on of hands of the Holy Ghost Each of these was indispensable indispensa-ble In the divine plan Faith was the mainspring of theU whole system Without this no good thing was possible pos-sible and the hope of salvation was a dream From the point of view of the Mormon that was not faith which did not prompt the believers to the performance of good works Faith was a great element of power an opener of the door which separates earth and heaven a saver and a regenerator of men Repentance accompanied belief and was equally Indispensable in the gospel system Faith could not exist without repentance coming as one of its immediate im-mediate fruits Repentance shows recognition of our infraction of the divine di-vine law and the wish of the believer to atone for his waywardness of the past Standing out as the great star In the Mormon theory was the doctrine of baptism This was necessary to entrance in the divine kingdom the immediate type of the burial and i resurrection the only means afforded by the dlety for the regeneration of the sinful soul Only one method in the administration of this ordinance could be correct This was the example ex-ample of the Christ in his own humble submission to the ordinance complete emersion In the grave of waters Sprinkling and other divergent methods meth-ods were merely corruptions of the original ordinance As the name signified I sig-nified and as the purpose of the ordinance ordi-nance would plainly show it was a rebirthan entrance upon a new and uncorrupted life I Baptism authoritatively administered adminis-tered was preparatory to the reception recep-tion of the last ordinance that of the I gift of the Holy Ghost This was the baptism of fire and was likewise a regenerator re-generator I placed in man the divine essence the monotor and guide and the inspirer of his thoughts The plan embodied in the four doctrines doc-trines had existed from the beginning and should live throughout all the future I was not only for those who live in the flesh the spirits of the dead in their abode in the eternal I world might taste of the golden cup I and gain the salvation of obedience |
